Syrup epidemic is a danger to your oral health

“You know what’s in my Styrofoam…what? S-Y-R-UP!”,

If you’re familiar with these lyrics:
1) you might be a fan of rapper Lil’ Wayne, and
2) you might be familiar with one of his favorite recreational concoctions (he mentions in the song above) called “Purple Drank”, which he’s often photographed chugging the concoction from a baby bottle or his famous Styrofoam cup.

Purple Drank for those who don’t know is a concoction of jolly rancher candy, Promethazine/Codeine Syrup (the legal prescription cough syrup used to treat flu symptoms), and soda (most commonly Sprite). However, it’s often mixed with other illegal and rather deadly ingredients—such as Ecstasy, marijuana use, or drinking alcohol. More than a recreational beverage, Purple Drank, which is also commonly called Sizzurp, Texas Tea (an ode to its roots), Purple Jelly or Purple Sprite, Bo, Barre, or just plain Lean, is actually pretty dangerous—especially to your pearly whites.

When the drink first became popular by hip-hop artists like Three 6 Mafia, Eminem, Kanye West, T.I., RickRoss, Ludacris, Fat Joe, Youngbloodz, and Drake, it was relegated to the hip hop music scene, or most particularly the “chopped and screwed” style of hip hop, known for its slow speeds so that user could buzz out, or get high, while doing both. However, today, kids as young as 14-years-old are using purple drank to get high clubs for that zombie-like high. Purple Drank is becoming an epidemic, and a danger to your health and teeth.

Other than the obvious side effects of too much Purple Drank, such as:
  • Lethargy
  • Dizziness
  • Light-headedness
  • Severe perspiration
  • Confusion
  • Blurry vision
  • Impaired judgment
  • Racing pulse
  • Hallucinating
  • Weight gain due to the high sugar content
  • Fever
  • Muscle stiffness or soreness
  • Syrup addiction
  • And most tragically, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (or NMS) which can be fatal
Purple Drank has serious and detrimental effects on your teeth when it’s extensively consumed. And now more and more syrup addicts are realizing this rather overlooked relationship between the sugary drink and their teeth. It’s true; because of the high sugar content of this concoction, “syrup addicts”, like the S-Y-R-U-P master, Lil’ Wayne, are suffering the oral consequences. Wayne himself had to undergo severe dental surgery—including eight root canals, tooth implants, and extensive dental work via a cosmetic dentist to save his remaining teeth—before reporting for incarceration in 2010.

My thought: A few days ago, I saw news on national television about several Indonesian teenagers who almost dying of drinking Codeine Syrup that mixed by alcohol drink and drugs. So, it’s obvious that the danger of the “Purple Drank” has widely spread –around the world- though we haven’t yet been familiar with the term. Parents should know about this and tell their teenagers about this harmful drink –before they try it for whatever reason.
