Tips for Becoming an American Citizen

>> May 10, 2013

So you have decided that the United States of America will be your new home. You have heard how this is the land of opportunities. You have heard how living in the United States of America can make all of your dreams come true. Congratulations on your decision. You really can find your dreams in America as long as you are more than willing to work for them. America will welcome you with open arms, but there are a few things that you should know before you move. Here are some tips that will make it much easier for you to get across the border and call the United States of America your new home.

Get All Your Papers in Order
You can't expect to just walk across the border and exclaim, “I am an American citizen!” It would be nice, but things don't work like that. You need to make sure that you have all of your paperwork in order before you even start planning this out. You will need passports and photo identification. In order to see the full list of things you are going to need, visit the official United States Immigration web site. This web site will be able to tell you just about everything that you need to know about becoming a United States citizen.

Don't Try to Bring Anything Dangerous With You
This may sound like common sense to you, but you would be surprised by the amount of people who forget simple little things like pocket knives. Don't make this mistake because it can ruin your opportunity of becoming a United States citizen.

Understanding the United States Monetary System
Try to familiarize yourself with the US money system as money in the United States may be very different from what you are used to. It is a good idea to get a good understanding of how the different money denominations work in the United States.
While you are at it, you should also take a closer look at the current exchange rates. You may end up losing some money if the exchange rate does not work out in your favour. All of this information can easily be found on the Internet. You just need to put some time into researching it all.

Do You Plan on Driving?
Driving may be very different for you in the United States. It may even seem backwards. In the United States, the driver sits on the left side of the vehicle and drives on the right side of the road. Don't jump behind the wheel of a car until you fully understand the rules of the road. You could end up getting a huge fine or you could end up getting hurt.

Should You Hire a Moving Company?
If you plan on bringing a lot of personal belongings with you, then you should most definitely hire a moving company. Just make sure that you locate a company that specialises in moving to America. Not all international moving companies are created equally. Some of them will know the fastest ways to get all of your personal belongings across the border.  Make your decisions wisely.
