About Sewer Line

A sewer line system consists of a main line and secondary lines. The secondary lines are spread throughout the house from wash basins to toilet pans to bathtub drains to kitchen sinks and laundry rooms and are attached to the main line that directs all waste water to the septic tank of your house.

If the main line is clogged, any water you run in the house will create problems. It will cause water to seep into toilets and basements. However, if the secondary line is clogged, it may just cause water to collect in some basin or tub, else other areas are okay to use. If you don’t give attention to a secondary clog, it may soon turn into a bigger and expensive issue.

What causes sewers to clog?

Some common causes of clogged sewer are tree roots, female hygiene products, hair, grease, toilet papers and so on. Tree roots account to major problems in old houses where tree roots intrude into pipelines. These roots get attracted to the warmth and dampness of the sewer lines. These roots once inside the pipeline grow taking natural nutrients from the sewage. As the roots get stuck in the pipeline, other debris gets accumulated in the roots and then cause clogs.

When to get alert?

Some of the major early symptoms of a clog are: slow passage of water in the sink or bath tub drain and gurgling sound coming from drains. Even after clearing any blocked vents or removing temporary blockades in the drain, if the water flow is still slow, you need to seek help.
