How the EYFS Framework is Established

>> Aug 2, 2016

EYFS is an acronym that stands for the Early Years Foundation Stage, a program that sets the standards for the development, care, and learning of children from infancy to 5 years of age. This type of plan was introduced in the UK in 2008 with the idea of developing and establishing best childcare practices. Nurseries, preschools, and child minders follow these carefully outlined standards so that parents can rest easier about the childcare or preschool education that their children receive.

How the EYFS Framework is Established

Areas covered in the EYFS framework include safeguarding, welfare, learning, and development, including meeting the objectives for early learning activities. A handbook has been compiled that contains EYFS details for all early years headteachers, professionals, and local authorities. Details are included about EYFS assessments and direction is provided for recording a child’s achievements, completing an EYFS profile, and making dependable and accurate judgments about EYFS attainment. An EYFS handbook is used along with an assessment, exemplification materials, and reporting arrangements.

Exemplification materials are used to help practitioners make precise judgements for a child’s attainment and help moderators assess the precision of practitioners’ judgments. The materials are also designed for stakeholders who want to examine children’s development and learning. For example, if you enroll your child in a nursery in Dubai, a progress check is typically introduced by providers who follow the EYFS standards. The check is designed to determine a child’s developmental needs so any additional support can be implemented without delay.

The EYFS framework does not necessitate that the check be done in a standard or prescribed format. It only requires that information be given to parents in the areas of learning and development, namely in the form of personal, emotional and social development; physical development; and language and communication.

The Parents’ Role
Child care providers and educators recognize that parents play a major role in supporting their child’s learning and development. Therefore, parents need to know what to anticipate in relation to their child’s EYFS development. This type of program enables parents to progress through the expectations of individual age bands so they can, again, better support their child’s learning and development.

Revised EYFS planning now emphasizes the need for child care providers and educators to spend more time interacting with children in their classroom or program in order to encourage critical and creative thinking and enhanced skills in early communication and language development. The EYFS framework also encourages moms and dads to interact with their children as well or provide ideas on how they can support development in the home.

In addition, child care providers are encouraged to identify, as soon as possible, any supplemental needs a child may require and to strengthen these needs with specific colleagues. Nursery providers are encouraged to share a summary of a child’s progress at two and three years of age with parents. The idea is also to refocus the development and learning of the youngest children during the formative years through three previously mentioned areas: personal, emotional and social development; physical development; and language and communication.
