4 Home Maintenance Emergencies You Should Be Prepared For

>> Apr 13, 2017

Your home is your sanctuary. It is where you go to rest, relax and recharge. So when a home maintenance emergency strikes it can quickly send you into a panic. However, it doesn’t have to. When you prepare properly for a home maintenance emergency, it will be far easier to address.

To make sure that you are prepared, we’ve gathered a list of 4 of the most common home-related emergencies and the best ways to prepare for them.

1. Lost key

It’s bound to happen to everyone at least once, although some people are notorious for losing their keys. You can prepare for this one easily by dropping off a spare set of keys with the neighbours and in exchange you can offer to keep a spare of theirs. That way, you don’t have to call your landlord, if you have one, or wait for your room mate or spouse to come home for work in the event of forgetting your keys or locking yourself out by accident.

However there are other issues that could arise such as problems with the lock like the key breaking inside the lock. These unfortunate accidents are difficult to avoid but for peace of mind, make sure to have the contact details of an emergency locksmith located in your area saved in your mobile phone. That way the situation will be sorted as soon as possible.

2. Power outage

Power outages can be more than just a nuisance. In winter, a power outage that leaves your home without heating can be quite the disaster. Imagine scrambling to gather coats, jackets and blankets to keep you and your loved ones warm in the dead of winter. Then there is also cooking to consider. How will you cook if your power is out for an extended period of time? Even just imagining it is stressful.

The good news is that even though you can’t prevent a power outage, you can prepare for it. When you hire a generator installer, you create an effective plan to tackle this very situation.

When you install a generator you can keep the heat on in certain areas throughout your home. You can also power enough electrical outlets to cook a meal on a hotplate if need be. Depending on the strength of your generator you may also be able to power other areas of your home.

If you think you might need a stronger generator, then simply speak to your generator installer, and they will inform you on the best generator for your needs.

3. Pipes freeze
When a power outage occurs in the winter and your home is left without heating, your pipes can freeze. Even if the power remains on and you lower your home’s heating, your pipes could still freeze as a result of the temperature dropping too low.

Your frozen pipes can then in turn, wreak havoc on your house. They will prevent you from using your water and could even burst flooding parts of your home. As a result of this you could face significant water damage.

It is far better to act preliminarily to protect your pipes from the cold rather than wait until they freeze. The first step in protecting them is to wrap them up in a specialised piping insulation. This insulation will help to keep them warm in case the temperature drops.

Once your pipes have this preliminary protection you may also want to consider installing a generator. When you have a generator, if the power goes out you can still heat your home and keep your pipes warm enough so they don’t freeze.

4. Boiler problems

Your boiler is a crucial component of your home. It is how you heat water to shower, bathe, wash dishes, and launder your clothing. Then, depending on the heating system in your home it may also be your main heating mechanism.

Needless to say, you don’t want your boiler to die on you. However, if you neglect to have it checked on a yearly basis this could happen. Most boiler installers and repairman recommend that you have your boiler checked at least once a year.

During these yearly check-ups, the repairman will lookout for any signs of damage or degradation due to daily use. When these issues are caught early your repairman can fix them well before cause boiler failure. Essentially, in this case, vigilance is your key method of protection when it comes to your boiler.
