Great ways for parents to get active with their kids

>> Jul 13, 2017

One hour of physical activity is recommended for all children over the age of five years. Being physically active enables children to:

- Grow in confidence
- Learn about the world around them
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Strengthen bones and muscles

The best way to make sure your children get enough exercise is by building this hour into your family life and exploring fun activities together -

Make exercise fun!

Scoot, cycle or walk to and home from school each day. This is also a great way to teach children about road safety. Don’t forget to ensure your child wears appropriate safety equipment, including a helmet, if using a bike or scooter.

During the school holidays spend time building a camp with your children. A treehouse or den is hugely exciting and a lovely way to work together as a family. Encourage your children to climb trees, under careful supervision of course.

Go skateboarding, ice skating or roller skating together. Again, do make sure your children are properly kitted out with helmets, shin and elbow pads to minimise scrapes and bruises.

Participate in a family challenge, such as a charity walk or fun run. Training together will prove a lot of fun. For a regular activity, check out parkrun, who run free weekly 5k runs in local parks.

Walk the dog together. If you don’t have a dog and don’t have time or inclination to get one, ask around friends and neighbours. Many people struggle to walk their dogs due to age, disability or lack of time and will jump at the chance to have someone else give their dog some exercise.

Find clubs and other sporting activities for your children to commit to on a regular basis. This will help them to learn about teamwork and they will learn skills along the way. Check out

Take time out of every weekend to participate in something fun and active, whether that be trampolining, rock climbing or a kick about in the park.

Visit National Parks around the UK. With acres of land to explore, as well as plenty of activity days, family fun days and guided walks, there is so much fun to be had and memories to be made.
