Tooth Restoration Procedures and Alternatives

>> Mar 12, 2018

Dental restoration is the treatment (with an objective of restoring) of the teeth integrity, functions, and morphology. The tooth structure that is missing may have emanated from external trauma or decay. Degenerative teeth may also be caused by the replacement material used in dental implants. Restorative dentistry entails the examination, identification, and inclusive disease management of a patient’s teeth and the structures that support it. Rehabilitating the dental formula for it to function and for aesthetic value is part of the reasons restorative dentistry exists.

Dentists consider a number of factors prior to making a decision on the best procedure. Where a patient suffers tooth decay, the dentist examines the extent it has affected the tooth and gums before deciding on the best restorative treatment. Where decay is quite extensive, leaving a tooth structure that is unsupported, indirect restoration may be the better option. Smaller decays can be restored using direct restoration.

Direct restoration: This process is quick to execute. It treats small damages to the tooth structure. Using resins, the damaged structure is restored.

Indirect restoration: This process is executed when the tooth is severely damaged. In such a circumstance, the method and material for use during restoration must be carefully planned.

Tooth restoration alternatives

Crowns: This is one type of indirect restoration procedures. Crowns cover the fragile tooth entirely. It is the solution for a tooth that is damaged beyond the ability of a filling to be used. Crowns restore the functions and color of an unhealthy tooth. Crowns may be manufactured from metal elements covered in porcelain coats. Some crowns are purely ceramic. A qualified dentist should be able to determine the best material for a crown in the prevailing circumstances.

Fillings: Bacterial infections, high levels of sugar in the diet, and acidity cause dental decay. Substandard oral hygiene and susceptibility to decay are also possible causes of tooth decay. Leaving a decay untreated will often lead to detrimental structural issues that require complex procedures to solve. Fillings can be performed in a single visit to your dentist. Porcelain and ceramic are considered better because they last longer than compound resins.

Bridges: This is a term used when crowns are bound together with an objective of covering and replacing teeth with many damages. They can assist in the restoration of a patient’s smile and comfortable mouth functions like chewing.

Implants: Dental implants are an alternative considered where the damage to the tooth is severe and direct restoration is not an option. An implant replaces the entire tooth structure. This incorporates root replacement. Implants are applied using titanium fixtures that are placed surgically into the jawbone. The replaced elements function as the new tooth root. Upon fusing together of the fixtures and jawbones, a new replacement tooth will be attached. The impact this new implant has on adjacent teeth is minimal. The replaced tooth assists in alleviating erosion of the jawbone and prevention of chewing impairments.

Whitening of teeth
Among other forms of tooth restoration is also the whitening of teeth to restore the color of a tooth that has yellowed because of improper hygiene or staining from things like coffee or cigarettes. Discolored teeth can be whitened using a balanced concentration of whitening bleach. The process does not take a lot of time.

Families are encouraged to acquire knowledge on dental health and healthy eating habits. A qualified dentist can offer consultation services on the best alternative for teeth restoration. The goal for any family should be averting the need for treatment by ensuring children are acquainted with healthy eating.
