Benefits and Drawbacks of Gas Heating Systems

>> Aug 13, 2018

If you are looking to upgrade your heating system for whatever reason, gas heating is a great option to consider. The technology used in these systems has been proven to be very efficient and has several other benefits apart from this. Here are the benefits and drawbacks of gas heating systems.

Benefits

  • As mentioned above, the condensing technology used in gas heating systems has been shown to be much more efficient than most other types of heating systems.
  •  Due to their efficiency, these systems guarantee you good value for your money. Your heating costs will go down significantly when you switch over to a gas heating system.
  •  Unlike other types of heating systems, gas heating systems are very compact. Therefore, they save space in the house, and you can use this space for other important things. With these heating systems, it is not necessary to have a fuel storage room. This is why they are very popular in many modernization projects as well as new buildings.
  •  Gas heating systems can easily be combined with solar thermal heating systems. So if you already have a solar thermal heating system in place, a gas heating system is a great option for you.
  • You do not need to have a natural gas supply to have a gas heating system in your home. Even if you do not have access to the natural gas line, you can use liquefied petroleum gas and still enjoy the numerous benefits of a gas heating system.
  • In some places, having a gas heating system can make you eligible for subsidies from the government. This indirectly lowers the cost of installing and maintaining such a heating system.

Drawbacks

  • Most countries do not produce gas locally and it is therefore mostly imported from gas-producing countries. This makes gas prices very volatile in most countries and it might therefore be hard to budget for your heating costs.
  • Gas prices are also expected to go up in the long-term and these heating systems might therefore become too expensive to maintain in the future. Also, the nature of natural gas makes it impossible to take advantage of the prevailing low prices by purchasing in advance. This is unless there is a large LPG tank that can be used to store the gas for future use.
  • Natural gas is a non-renewable resource. This means that using it does not help to preserve the environment. So if you are looking to have a greener home, this may not be a great option for you.

Despite the drawbacks, installing a gas heating system is a great investment in your home. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks, and it is therefore something worth considering. However, before installing a gas heating system, it is advisable to consult professionals from a local gas heating business to advise you on how to go about the installation, help you choose a good system, and help you with the installation. This is definitely not a project you should attempt to undertake on your own because of the safety hazards posed by natural gas. Just let the experts do it for you.
