Perils of Online Shopping

>> Jan 30, 2013

Just lately I was talking to my daughter who desperately needed a new purse. All of her “stuff” fit in this purse barely but it was bursting at the seams and what she originally thought was a nice color seems to now be showing up more along the lines of a baby poop yellow. So I took it upon myself to buy her a purse for Christmas. I ordered it online because I was trying to avoid the Christmas traffic and the packed stores. It looked absolutely adorable online and it seemed to be big enough. When it arrived I was so pleased that it was just as adorable in person as it was in the picture. The problem was that I could tell instantly it was going to be too small even if she pared down a little on her “stuff”.

She absolutely loved it when she opened it but as suspected when she tried to use it the first time there was not nearly enough room. But because it was so adorable she decided it could be used as a date purse, you know the purse, the one you take a lipstick, a compact, and a little money just in case? For that purpose it is acceptable and very stylish.

So, we decided to do a search together online since everyone was now at the stores taking back and we were plumb just worn out from Christmas. We looked together and separate and we thought we found the perfect purse in size, color, and in style. Have you ever noticed however that the bigger the purse the style factor goes down just a little for each inch? Anyway, we ordered it and anxiously awaited its arrival.

The package shows up about a week later and we open it in excitement. The first glimpse we get is of the color peeping out from under the wrap, which is a deep wine. We did not order a wine colored purse. When we pulled it out, still wrapped, we assumed that it had just come in the wrong color but it was very heavy also. I thought to myself that we must have had the dimensions wrong and that it was just too big. As we un-wrapped it we looked at each other first in shock and then it became a laughable situation. The thing was huge, covered in what looked like dirty copper brads or rivets over the entire purse. The handle was attached by an even larger dirty copper emblem of sorts and there were two tassels to open and close the zipper on top that were a good eight inches in length and two inches in diameter. Are you picturing this? My daughter is a 5’4”, 117 pound small framed young women who is twenty-seven years old. We laughed and talked about who might carry this purse!

Well, since we got it through Amazon there were no worries about getting it exchanged or getting our money back so we went through the channels to get this taken care of. When we got word back from the company that sold it to us they asked if it was just the wrong color. No, no, way more than the wrong color. My daughter was willing to exchange it for the one she originally ordered if they would send a box to ship it back in. Well, I guess it was not worth it for this company because they said they would give her the money back and she could just keep the purse! Keep the purse? What in the world were we going to do with it? We are hoping for a white elephant gift exchange or something in the future because we cannot imagine giving this to anyone we know. The weight alone would cause back problems even if you did not put anything in it!

Make it Fun: Help Your Kids Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

>> Jan 29, 2013

Everyone benefits from recycling, especially our children. If we teach them when they're young, they'll appreciate the Earth and take care of it when they are older. Preserving and protecting the world can be easy and fun, but also confusing if you don't do your research. As a family, think about ways you can reduce, reuse and recycle everyday items. Here are a few recycling ideas and green tips for eco-friendly homes.

DO:

  • Do: Make planet-saving activities fun by helping your kids craft bird feeders from household containers, organizing a yard sale or turning old clothes into new costumes.
  • Do: Recycle items that arent typically associated with recycling. Batteries, printer cartridges, and other electronics can and should be recycled but they require special care. Bring these items to a local electronic store, or contact the manufacturer to get prepaid recycling envelopes to send these items back to the proper shipping destination. There may be a recycling program at your child's school that awards them points for recycling.
  • Do: Use environmentally-friendly curtains and window blinds to reduce heating and cooling costs. Effective shades trap warm air in and keep cold air out.
  • Do: Take advantage of paperless options available to you. Get monthly bills emailed to you, make payments online, and read digital versions of periodical newspaper publications. Again, this will reduce the overall amount you have to recycle which is even better than receiving this material and then recycling it.
  • Do: Recycle old newspapers and magazines. Its easy to chuck paper materials in the garbage container when youre done, but its just as easy to put them in a separate recycling container.
  • Do: Think outside the box when it comes to recycling. As Good Housekeeping suggests, recycling is all about giving an existing product new life, so apply that to when ever you throw something out. Instead of putting an old TV on your curb for garbage day, see if any friends want it. Or, sell it online and make some quick cash.
  • Do: Reduce waste by using reusable shopping bags. Enlist your children to help you by giving them each a colored bag they're responsible for. When they go shopping with you, make sure they bring their bag to help you carry home purchased items.

DON'T:

  • Dont: Don't worry about separating lids from jars, caps from bottles or labels from containers. Recycling centers naturally take care of all of these tasks for you.
  • Don't: Recycle Styrofoam. Its dangerous and isn't a good idea. Throw it out with your regular garbage.
  • Dont: Throw out toys that can easily be recycled. Toys made entirely of plastic can be recycled the same way as any other plastic item. If a toy has any metals or electronics, they may not be recycled, but perhaps they can be donated or given to a friend.
  • Don't: Let water go to waste when you could reuse it. After washing dishes or laundry, use the leftover water to wash your car or water plants. Get your kids involved by making it their job to watch for ways to save water.
  • Dont: Don't recycle pizza boxes unless theyre completely clean. According to HeartWork Organizing, any leftover cheese or sauce in the box can completely contaminate anything else in the same recycling load.
  • Dont: Use disposable water bottles on a daily basis. Instead, buy one BPA-free aluminum or plastic water bottle and use it for months. You'll save money and help the environment at the same time.

5 Golden Rule of Wearing Jewelry for Women

>> Jan 28, 2013

Elegance, attention, status quo or simply a fashion statement are some of the reasons why women love to wear jewelries any time of the day or on most special occasions. Women spend time in searching for different jewelries which are perfect accessories to match their bags, shoes, and clothing. They spend not just time and energy but a lot of money as well. While some women maybe good at searching for the cheapest jewelries there are in town when they sum it all up, all the jewelries in their jewelry boxes or trays, they’ll realize that they have quite a fortune there.
Unfortunately, while many women find the best jewelries that match their personalities, most women fail at the mix and match portion when it comes to their outfits. All their efforts are to no avail when this happens. To save you from all the hassles, try the following golden rules when it comes to wearing jewelry for women:

Do Not Overdo It
You might have the best gold jewelries but this does not mean you have to wear them all at once. Two to three pieces should be enough. This means that a nice pair of gold earrings, bracelet and ring should be enough. Otherwise, if you want to show off that big gold watch your parents gave you then avoid wearing a big golden bracelet or an oversized gold ring too. One big piece of jewelry should be the star in your choice of accessories. Let one of them stand out from the rest as this will help you stand out from the crowd as well.

Wear them Smart
Wearing jewelries should not only be an emotional fulfillment but should be a smart move too. It should not just be based on what you feel like wearing but what works well with your age and body shape. If you are young or you look you with younger looking skin then going for chokers, bangles and longer necklaces should be fine. If you are thin or you want have some facial issues such as pimples or blemishes then putting on clip on earrings  should do the trick.

Match the Occasion
If you are attending a holiday party, then go bright and wear brilliance with jewelries that sparkle. Look festive with the right jewelries. Pearls are always perfect for formal gatherings especially if you are wearing something black or plain. You can also mix metals like gold and silver especially if the rest of your outfit has them.

Be Bold but Elegant
It’s always a delight to wear something bold once in a while such as a pair of earrings, ring or necklace with a large stone. However, make sure that you don’t wear them with printed outfit. Your jewelry will struggle with your other outfit for people’s attention. To look more elegant make sure you bold statement is the only fashion statement you are wearing loudly. The same is true if you are fond of outlandish hair accessories. You should wear simpler jewelries if you have outstanding hair accessories on.

Do More with Less
When you are not sure with how to make the most of the jewelries you have, never forget the last rule: Less is More. Standout amongst the crowd by understating which means wearing less jewelries but never without confidence. If you can’t decide which to wear then wear the one or two pieces that makes you happy. Remember not all of them, just one or two but always wear a smile and make a wonderful difference everywhere you go.

Monday Post

Happy Monday, every one! How’s your weekend? Last Saturday was my birthday. There’s no special celebration; prayers and greetings from my loved ones are more than enough for me.

My brother came Saturday morning for getting a massage treatment again. Glad to know his much better progress, now he’s able to drink with a glass –using his left arm and elbow. It’s something that he couldn’t do two weeks ago.

On Sunday night, we drove my brother to Bogor Train Station (West Java, Indonesia).

My brother and I on a pedestrian street that leads to the train station. My husband took this.

For Blue Monday, I also share a shot that captured at the same place with my last week BM post. In the front of the restaurant (the Shrimp Hut, Cibubur, West Java, Indonesia), there’s a vendor sold hermit crabs for pet –along with its colorful house that made from rubber sheets. My niece, Aflah, asked her mother to buy two hermit crabs and also a house for them. She chose the big one:)
