How to Remove and Dispose off Asbestos

>> Jan 10, 2013

Asbestos used to be a much sought after mineral because of its properties of insulation, resistance to fire and strength adding ability. However, Asbestos is really harmful to the environment and hence, in 1977, the government banned it. But many buildings that were built before that time still continue to have Asbestos. This has a potential of causing severe environmental hazards if it gets released into the environment.

There are certain things that you must know about this natural fiber mineral and they are as follows –

1.    Kinds Of Asbestos – There are two kinds of Asbestos –
  • Non Friable Asbestos – Floor tiles, shingles and asbestos cement are some examples of non-friable asbestos. This is comparatively safer as it is too strong to be crushed by hand. Hence, the chances of it releasing into the environment are much less. This is why they fall under low risk items. That being said, this means that you should be doubly careful of not crushing items made from asbestos.
  • Friable Asbestos – Insulating materials use friable asbestos and before the 1977 ban, paints, patching compounds and textures also used this. This asbestos can be crushed into a fine powder and is hazardous in nature.
2.  Removal Of Asbestos – This process can only be performed by trained workers and a lot of precaution needs to be taken before they start. Workers wear protective gear so that asbestos doesn’t enter their body. All the items of furniture are covered with a cloth or other protective fabric so that asbestos doesn’t settle on them during the process. Another thing to do is to wet the entire area surrounding it so that no debris are left in the air.

You can also use High Efficiency Particulate Air vacuum cleaners to clean the area of asbestos debris after the process. All the material that the workers wear should be disposable after the removal process. Also, make sure that you conduct necessary air safety tests before people are allowed back in the area.

3.  Disposal Of Asbestos –Unlike other minerals that you can easily dispose off in a simple bin hire, asbestos requires much more work. There are pretty stringent laws set by the government regarding the disposal of Asbestos and they must be followed carefully. The debris is packed securely in an air tight container by trained workers and later disposed into the nearest disposal facility that must be licensed.

There are alternatives to disposal as well, in case you find the removal a bit too hard on the pocket. Instead of eliminating the asbestos tile, get it covered to prevent the harmful exposure. EPA has listed many such tricks that you could follow.

Since asbestos is so dangerous to the environment, there are federal laws in place to govern asbestos handling, removal and disposal. A lot of paperwork and pre removal checks are performed to ensure safety. If you are a homeowner, the laws are much less strict for you but that doesn’t mean that you are exempt from them.

Be Safe and Stylish New Windows and Doors

This article is written for those looking to refresh and renew their homes. Focusing on popular and modern UPVC builds, it offers a concise and easy to follow summary of the benefits of using this material for windows and doors. Read on for more information.

With so many styles, designs and materials on the market, choosing new windows and doors can leave you feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. With so much choice, it's often hard to step back and imagine how a door or window will fit within the existing house design and what style will suit best.

However, with the growth in popularity of UPVC windows and doors, there's an easy way to keep things simple and without the fuss and bother often associated with large scale alterations and renovations. In fact, UPVC based windows and doors have a great deal to offer the home owner, least of all a structured and clear approach to keeping your home safe and stylish.

Expansive choice.
UPVC based windows and doors come in a range of styles and need not be limited to a solid block material or colour. Made from a stable plastic in which galvanized steel and foam inserts can be placed, doors and window made from this material are both strong and durable. Whilst each of the UPVC windows and doors has this base, the outer layer can be painted and veneered to suit each individual home.

From plain doors in clean white or block colour to wooden styles with glass panels, there's little that can't be achieved. In fact, glass inserts are a popular option and can be used to increase light and add attractive detail.

For windows, there is again more choice, with Sement and French Windows on offer as well as the popular Reversible and Tilt-and-Turn window designs. You can even make the most of a bespoke service to ensure you get precisely what you want and what fits with your home.

Long lasting.
Where older doors and windows may require repainting, varnishing, cleaning and repairing due to weather damage, the UPVC range can withstand varied weather conditions. They won't warp, corrode, dent or flake.

In addition to their durable properties, these types of doors and windows can also provide better insulation over longer periods of time. This is because the UVPC material will not expand or contract in hot and cold weather, meaning a home owner can prevent gaps forming between the door and its frame. This means it's possible to reduce heat loss and as a result, reduce your bill.

Security conscious.
With a greater construction process comes a greater possibility for security systems, with a range of handles and locks available to fit many different styles and designs of UVPC doors and windows. From multi lock options to bolts and security chains, you can easily personalise your purchase to suit your needs and requirements.

Get a good price.
With fewer bulk materials required, UVPC designs costs less to make, which means cost savings can be passed on to customers at shop level. There's even the chance to pick up a bargain or special offer, with companies now offering deals on their diverse UVPC ranges available online.

For the latest in safe and stylish doors and windows, why not take a look at the online collections and enjoy browsing from the comfort of your own home? With so much choice you're bound to find just what you need and with home delivery often an option, there's no need to worry about getting the door to and from your home.

Is Retail Affected by Short Web User Attention Spans?

Studies show that web users will click away from a site within five seconds if they can't find what they're looking for. These people buy in the High Street too. Is retail affected by the shortening attention spans of shoppers?

Attention spans and web design
Studies show that a web user will give a new website as little as five seconds to catch their attention. That means if they can't find what they're looking for in that crucial first five seconds, they're gone. This is absolutely vital for ecommerce sites. They have to be designed from the ground up with that five second attention span in mind. Good web designers have this down to a fine art. The site will use that valuable 'above the fold' visual retail space to communicate what they're about, what the offers are and what the USP is. Video and images will catch the visitor's attention and copy will be short and punchy. Navigation around the site will be straightforward and even when the visitor leaves, remarketing ads will follow him to remind him of the store wherever he browses.

Are there lessons for retail?
Many retailers have opened online stores but can they take any lessons learned there and apply them to the High Street store? Above the fold on the web home page is just like the shop window, but the analogy can go further. The shopper should be able to find his way easily around the stock which should be laid out in a logical manner. Are the most profitable lines easy to find? Are the prices clear? What about special offers? There are all kinds of retail fittings and accessories to help, from good signage and racking to rail size dividers and shop hanger size cubes.

The deal is in the detail
There is evidence that shortened attention spans are beginning to have an effect on High Street shoppers and the smallest details can make a difference. How much does the customer really want that dress? How long will she spend looking for her size? Perhaps not as long as in the past and then she'll be gone from the shop and looking elsewhere on the street. Shop assistants are expensive and there will never be enough of them to serve every customer at once. Clearly marked sizes on shop hanger size cubes can help her find the right size much more quickly and give her more time to make that purchase   and more purchases. Good ecommerce web sites are also good at up-selling. Are there accessories beside the changing rooms and tills?

Conclusion
The retail market is extremely tight and the smallest things can make a difference. Having suffered at the hands of business lost to the online world it is perhaps time for retailers to use lessons learned from online stores to gain a competitive edge on the High Street. Much more can be done to help the customer find and purchase the goods they are looking for quickly and without fuss. In these tough economic times, hiring more staff is never going to be the answer, but much as good web design aids the visitor to serve themselves, good retail design can make use of similar tools and philosophies to ensure purchases are maximised.
