Tips to Prevent Your Kids’ Dust Allergies
>> Jun 29, 2015
Are you tired of
waking up in the middle of the night with your children complaining about itchy
skin?
Dust by itself does
not cause allergies. It is the dust mites that are the most common cause of
allergy from house dust. They eat dead skin which is why they are present in
all the places you and your family spend a lot of time in. The worst part is
that dust mites are invisible to the naked eye and there can be as many as 2
million just living in your mattress alone!
Getting rid of dust
mites to lessen allergies from dust is obviously not an option. But there are
ways to reduce exposure to them and help our kids fight off dust allergies,
here’s some of the tips commonly known and used for carpet
cleaning in Melbourne.
There are a lot of
things in your house where dust mites can thrive; you need to find out what
these are and how you can deal with them:
- Woolen blankets are a haven for dust mites, try replacing this with cotton.
- Encase your child’s mattress and pillows in an allergen-proof fabric so that you can prevent these dust mites from breeding in the bedding.
- If you’re using shades, consider replacing them with shutters so you can easily damp-wipe them when cleaning. But if you still prefer using curtains, make sure to wash them in very hot water. While cold water can wash off the dust mites, hot water can kill them.
Consider using carpets or rugs
A lot of people think
that carpets and rugs can cause asthma and allergy attacks because of the
amount of dust that can get trapped in the carpet fibres. What they don’t know
is that carpets and rugs actually act as an air filter, trapping airborne
allergens and pollutants that can trigger an asthma or an allergy attack.
But like all filters,
carpets and rugs should be kept clean and healthy, It is best to vacuum them
twice a week for maintenance, but a professional clean from carpet cleaning
experts will ensure that your carpets are completely free of germs and
bacteria.
Home ventilation
Remove or at least
lessen the moisture in the air by reducing indoor humidity. One was to do this
is to use an air-conditioner, or if not, a dehumidifier will do. Avoid putting
objects that can add moisture in an enclosed room, like an aquarium or a
humidifier. By doing this, you are lessening the chances of dust mites and
mould to thrive in your home.
For an inexpensive
alternative, you can always just use a filter in your central air system. A
simple cheese cloth can be used to catch dust, you just need to put them over
your vents.
Wash and vacuum regularly
Our kids love stuffed
animals, but they are also a haven for dust mites. You can wrap them in plastic
or put them in a bag and place them in the freezer, or use hot water to kill
the dust mites.
Throw your rugs,
blankets, sheets, curtains and pillowcases in very hot water. Try to avoid
steam cleaning because moist might provide an ideal environment for dust mites
to live in. Make sure that surfaces prone to dust are damp-wiped weekly.
Vacuuming should be
done twice a week. Your vacuum cleaner should have the HEPA filter to ensure
that dust, dirt, and debris have been cleaned away. But also make sure that
your vacuum cleaner is clean. The suction capacity of your vacuum cleaner will
be reduced if you leave it full and dirty. You can just empty the bag, clean
the filter, and check for stuck debris.
Create a healthy
living space for you and for your whole family. By reducing the exposure to
dust mites, your kids will enjoy staying at home without worrying about allergy
attacks.
