How to Pass a Basic Vehicle Control Skills Test Without It Being Overwhelming

>> Jun 4, 2014

Everyone shudders when they are faced with having to pass a basic vehicle control skills test.  It's actually nerve wracking enough to cause even some older drivers who have let their licenses expire running to brush up on their driving lessons.

But it doesn't have to be that way.  Here are some rules to follow in order to avoid having to dash off to one of those my driving school places, with the instructor's name on the door.

Vehicle Rules
1.  You will be tested in your own vehicle, or whatever car you drive to the Motor Vehicle Department in.  Be sure you are familiar with it.  Know where everything is located and how to put it into action.  This includes the parking brake and even the windshield wipers and washer, the heater and defroster etc.
2.  Be sure that all the equipment in your vehicle is operating correctly.  There will be no excuses accepted for defective or missing equipment.

Before You Start Driving
1.  Before you even get into the car you'll be driving you should have taken note of nearby parked cars, people, or objects that would hinder the safe movement of your car.  It always pays to be observant.
2.  Once you are seated in the car adjust your seat and the steering wheel if necessary so that you will be sitting straight behind the wheel with your back against the seat and your feet able to easily reach the foot controls.
3.  The car windows and inside and outside mirrors should be clean and adjusted so that you have a clear view to the rear with minimal blind spots.
4.  Fasten the seatbelt.

The Test
Taking the actual test itself is almost like getting driving lessons again, as you are graded on every move you make and could find yourself headed to that place with the sign my driving school if you don't perform properly.
1.  Follow directions exactly.
2.  Use the brake before shifting the car into gear from the Park position.  A sudden start is not the best way to begin your driving test.
3.  Try to make the shift smoothly and then accelerate slowly.  Always keep in mind that you must keep control of the vehicle.  Still, don't take too long to get the car going at the speed it would use on the road.  And while you are out on the road, pay attention and be sure you keep the car going near the speed limit.  A little under or over is usually acceptable, but don't go too slow or too fast.
4.  Use your turn signals every time you make a turn and you will also be expected to show you know hand signals.  You might think this is unimportant as you probably will never use them, but it matters.

Above all don't obsess.  Your vehicle control skills test will most likely turn out just fine if you only stay calm and remember what you've learned.

10 Safety Precautions You Need to Take When Working with Electricity

>> Jun 2, 2014

Every electrician has a story about making a mistake while working with electricity.  Some stories are funny while others serve as a solemn warning of the deadly consequences of failing to treat electricity with the respect and caution it deserves.  The following list is designed to summarize important precautions you should take when working with electricity.

Image:voices.yahoo.com

1.   Treat all devices with caution and as if they are connected to an energy source until you personally disconnect them.  And even then, exercise caution while you double check!
2.   Always disconnect the power source before working on any electrical device. Never try to service a live circuit or any device that is still connected to a power source.  If you’re working with exposed wires, use an electrical tester to determine if there is any electricity flowing through them before beginning work.
3.   Never leave energized equipment unattended.  If you are going to leave the area, unplug the equipment or disconnect the circuit, and never ever touch, pick up or work on equipment that someone else has left unattended.
4. Do not use or work on electrical equipment if there is any kind of liquid present.  This includes the obvious, such as standing water and spilled chemicals, and the not so obvious, such as perspiration, condensation and damp soil.
5.   Always wear the proper protective gear when you work with electricity.  This means choosing shoes that have a thick rubber sole, coveralls that do not have any exposed metal pieces on them, nonconductive gloves and goggles. It might seem like overkill, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
6.   Do not attempt electrical jobs that you have not been trained to do.  Rewiring a building’s fire or alarm system is a job that requires a commercial electrician.  It is not a job that can be done by a newly certified electrician!
7.   Always put a cap on the wire ends when you are working on a circuit board or panel.  If you don’t, you could end up short-circuiting the live wire or worse, shocking yourself if you accidentally touch them.
8.   Always ensure that your equipment is in safe working condition.  Never use tools that are in poor or unsafe condition, and never use tools that were not designed for the task. Remove any tools that have frayed cords or show signs of overheating.  Never attempt to repair damaged equipment unless you are certified to do so.
9.   Utilize a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI or GFI) as a secondary means of preventing electrical injury or fire, but remember that while it can reduce the chance of an electrical injury, it cannot prevent dangerous electrical shocks nor can it prevent ignition in an explosive atmosphere.
10.Ensure that you are working in safe conditions and that you have the proper equipment to treat injuries and accidents.  Every job site should have a readily accessible first aid kit and every crewmember should be certified in CPR and first aid training.

When pressure is on to complete a job quickly, following these safety precautions can often feel like a hassle, but not following them can result in mistakes that have the potential to be dangerous or, in the worst case, deadly.  Showing a healthy level of respect for the power of electricity and exercising caution when working with it is a smart and safe way to ensure that you will be ready for the next job that comes your way!

Monday Post

I have another lazy Monday. My husband is still out of town. He’s supposed to come home since last Friday but an urgent problem came and he had to postpone his schedule. It caused some plans must be cancelled.

A niece who studies in another town came last Friday –almost midnite- for a short weekend getaway as she’d like to celebrate her birthday with us here. My SIL bought a birthday chocolate cake last Saturday morning and we held a small celebration. My niece took the first flight this morning.

There’s no blue on the birthday cake, so for Blue Monday; I share other random shots.
