Marriage Advice: What Not to Say to Your Partner

>> Jul 25, 2010

Words can make or break us, hurt or heal us. Don’t you agree with this? When I still worked, I’ve ever had bad experience with my boss. He degraded or insulted my work with his harsh words. Have you ever had the similar experience?

Words can hurt. We know deep down that the words can cut like a knife. In a marriage, what we say to our spouse is important. The wrong thing can tear a husband's ego to slices. The wrong words can send a wife's self esteem falling. Words can be the life and death of a marriage.

Often husbands and wives use words out of anger or ignorance, with no conscious awareness of the consequences that their words may have on their spouse. It may be one sentence that could stab like a knife through the heart or it could be small words, relentless torture, that little by little, tear down delicately the love in your marriage.

Here are some suggestions on what to say to make your marriage stronger :

DO SAY:
-I love you
-You look beautiful (or handsome)
-I appreciate you
-I believe in you
-You are a wonderful person
-Thank you
-Would you please help me with this?
-I am thinking of you
-I can't wait to see you
-Please
-Can I help you?
-I love spending time with you
-You mean everything to me
-You are so strong (to the husband)
-You mean the world to me
-I am so lucky to have you in my life
-I am proud of you!
-I respect you
-I am here for you
-I am listening.

You may add other words that you usually use in your own marriage. Things that you should consider are: Always ask, don't demand. Give compliments. Share your feelings. You may think she knows that you love her. You make think he knows that you appreciate him, but often they don't. They need to hear it. Use "I" instead of "You" to start your sentences, so not to put your spouse on the defensive.

Next post is the turn of DON’T SAY part. See you…

A few days ago I and my hubby went to Agri Park (Bogor, West Java, Indonesia). Though this place is near our home, it’s our visit for the first time. Besides eating places, we can also see several animals there, such as these goats. I think they have cute faces…

Couple’s Corner: Our Hobbies

>> Jul 22, 2010

This week’s topic is talking about hobbies. Well, we need doing our hobbies to relieve stress and spend our spare times with positive things. Since we’re talking about inexpensive hobbies, I won’t mention shopping at malls here. Moreover, when I’m visiting malls, I seldom buy fashion stuffs; window shopping is more fun for me!

I have two new hobbies: blogging and photography. I’m not a web master or a professional photographer; I just like doing it. Fortunately, blogging is still inexpensive. I pay around $11 per month for internet connection and there’s no increase in the electricity bill. Of course, I don’t get a good internet connection; my connection would be very slow in the last week, every month.

To capture moments, I still use my pocket camera. A dslr camera is too expensive for me. I really want to be able to draw things, but I don’t have the talent. My three brothers are good at drawing; it’s only me that can’t draw. Photography is a good alternate; taking reality and beautiful objects is like drawing pictures…

Reading is still fun; but I don’t do it often anymore. There’s a small library near our house. It’s very cheap to borrow a book for a week. Cinta Baca is my favorite place to read and borrow books. I can read various topics of books and novels, according to my mood and need, hehehe.

Let’s talk about my hubby’s hobbies. There’s no doubt, he love cooking. Since we don’t have lots of money, he’s never cooked expensive food. It becomes a challenge to him, how to make delicious food from ordinary matter. My task is cleaning the mess in the kitchen! He also loves his vespa. He renovated it from an old junk vespa. When the weather is fine, we prefer riding the vespa to go anywhere, as long as it’s still inside the city.

I and my hubby love to watch movies, going out for food and listening music. It still can be inexpensive; since we’re fans of yummy but cheap food. There are our favorite places that offer delicious food in best prices. If we watch movies at cinemas; we prefer weekdays; it’s cheaper than weekend. My hubby usually downloads our favorite songs from internet.

It’s my story. What about your hobbies? Is it inexpensive, too?

The Ten Phrases Not to Say to Your Kids (3)

>> Jul 20, 2010

Here are the last three phrases:

8. “Don’t say that.”
Notice this situation: a mother was embarrassed when her daughter once pointed at a frizzy-haired woman at the grocery store and shouted with wide-eyed wonder, “Look at the witch!”

You shouldn’t think that the girl was being rude; she was simply being a kid. Whether the difference is race, ethnicity, orientation, physical abilities, or appearance, these experiences are perfect opportunities to look into kids’ thoughts about diversity, at which point you should share your own.

Don’t shut down the conversation, but rather welcome the open dialogue. As for the inappropriate comments, that is something that you need to discuss with your child, however, do not silence them, as silence taught to a child can breed into an emotional and mental issue later in life.

9. “Let me help you.”
It can be heartbreaking to watch a frustrated child. But sometimes it doesn’t pay to do the superhero rescue. The more challenges children overcome, the prouder they’ll feel, says Dr. Stanley I. Greenspan, author of Great Kids. You are setting your child up for failure when you indulge them and make problems go away instantly. The only way to overcome challenge is to face it head on.

10. “Don’t make me turn this car around!”
There’s not much worse than a car ride with a badly behaved child (or two or three). When you’ve gotten to this point, you’ve already lost control, even from the driver’s seat. If you want to head home, just do it, but don’t give your children the authority to make that decision for you.
