How to Improve the Safety of Your Pool Area

One of the important things you need to consider when putting in a pool are the safety issues. You should also be vigilant about safety if you have young children or if there are young children living in the neighbourhood who could get into your backyard and accidentally fall in your pool. As well as buying all the necessary pool supplies you have to put up a proper safety fence. It can also help to lay non-slip stone tiles around your pool area so that when they get wet people won't easily slip and hurt themselves.

Safety Fence
By law you are required to have a safety fence around your pool. Many toddlers and young children drown every year in backyard pools but a lot of accidents are prevented by the fact that people have safety fences. You need to make sure that you fence adheres to the right safety standards. You can install fences that are specifically built as pool safety fences, or you can choose to put up a different style fence. If you choose something different you need to make sure that it is the correct height, that small children cannot slip through anywhere and that you have a proper gate with a child-proof latch. There are a wide variety of pool-fences available that will enhance the look of your pool area or you might choose to have a brick wall, a brush fence or a stylish glass fence that will not impede your view of your pool area.

Stone Tiles
You should look at laying tiling around your pool that is a non-slip surface. Things like polished concrete or marble are very slippery when wet and are not appropriate surfaces to have beside a pool. Young children often run around pools when they are playing in them, and as the ground around the pool becomes wet children can easily slip and hurt themselves, or they could even fall into the pool, hit their heads and subsequently drown. When installing a pool you need to put safety at the forefront of your design decisions.

First Aid
It is important that someone in your household learns first aid, particularly if you have young children and a swimming pool. You should also have an up to date well stocked first aid kit close by the pool and regularly check that you have everything in it that you would need in case of an emergency. It is a handy skill to learn CPR, which is something you learn during a first aid course.

Improve Visibility

You can help improve the safety of your pool by simply improving the visibility around your pool area. Cut back any trees or bushes that might block your view of the pool so you can see it from inside the house. If you have older children you may let them swim while you are inside, but it is good to keep an eye on anyone who is in the pool, no matter what their age. Small children and toddlers must be supervised around water at all times.

8 Ideas for a Gift Basket for a Man

>> Nov 9, 2011

Sometimes it can be impossible finding the right gift for a man. Women are easy to buy presents for but for some reason it is usually a struggle when it comes to gifts for men. Instead you can give them a few smaller items inside either gift baskets, or food items in gift hampers.

Barbecue gifts
If you entertain a lot or do a fair few meals on the barbecue make up a gift basket with all the tools he will ever need to cook a smoking barbecue. You can buy barbecue sets that have tongs and spatulas especially for the barbecue and you can also include a stubby holder, an apron, a barbecue cookbook and a few bottles of marinades.

Gifts for the handy man
If your guy is a handy man and you have trouble getting him out of his back shed and into the house, then give him a gift basket with items in it like a new tape measure, a hammer, a set of screwdrivers and a book on Do-It-Yourself projects. Perhaps for fun include a list of all the things you'd like done around the house.

Grooming gifts
Some men like to pay attention to their looks and take care of themselves so give him a travel shaving kit, after shave, moisturiser for men, nice shampoo, some body wash, a long handled brush for the shower and a gift voucher for a massage or facial.

Movie night
For the movie lover fill a gift basket with some of his favourite movies or some great classic action ones like 'The Great Escape' and 'Zulu'. Include some popcorn, chips, lollies and chocolate and as the main present give him some movie vouchers which he can claim at the cinema and see whatever movies he likes.

Food lover
Depending on his taste a gift basket can include foods like cheese and wine, beer and nuts, chocolate and coffee or a mixture of his favourites.

Sports fan
For those who enjoy sports make up a basket based around his favourite team. If he is football mad then buy him season tickets to see his favourite team play or even buy him a club membership. Professional sporting teams have all sorts of memorabilia so include a team scarf, shirt or jumper, a beanie or hat and you might even be able to get signed portraits of team players.

Car mad
If your partner is crazy about his car then get him a gift basket with things that he can use with his car. Sponges and a chamois for washing his car and a bottle of car wax can be included in the basket, as well as tickets to a racing event. Other items can include a steering wheel cover and car seat covers.

Book loverHe may enjoy reading so make up a gift basket filled with books by his favourite author and others about areas of interest, like sports, politics or history. You could also include a magazine subscription to his favourite magazine.

Watery Views

I’m already at home again from a short trip to my husband’s home town. We left my FIL’s house (Bumiayu, Central Java, Indonesia) on Monday morning and reached our home (Bogor, West Java, Indonesia) in the night. I had no mood to do blogging yesterday; but I should update this blog today.

For Watery Wednesday this week, I share here some shots that captured during on the way to go to my husband’s home town, last Friday. We dropped by for lunch at a restaurant (Pesona Laut) in Indramayu, West Java that has sea view. The weather was dark at that time. Later, the rain was falling down. Fortunately I’ve taken pictures before. It seemed that the big waves have reached the place. Some concrete parts are falling apart and all lamps on the edge are broken.

To Settle or Not To Settle: Women Who Say No To Family

>> Nov 6, 2011

A long time ago, you decided that having kids just wasn’t for you. Apparently that decision – though it your personal decision – does not sit well with a lot of people. If you’re mulling over the same decision and leaning towards the same outcome as you did, you have a lot of things to consider. It’s not an easy one. People will say you’re selfish. They’ll say you’re wasting your life and your opportunities. They think it’s about the weight, or the maternity wear or the money. They will tell you over and over again that you’ll change your mind.. and maybe you will… or maybe you’ll get sick of hearing it. Either way, it’s going to be a difficult decision.

Below are a few factors that might help you in your contemplation:

Are you happy?
If you’re at a point in your life that is now or never when it comes to having kids, it means your decision has to be made quickly. So ask yourself, are you happy how you are, or are you yearning for something else? Can you stay happy? Imagine yourself and your partner in ten years or even twenty – do you see yourself with kids, or without? Do you really want a future with no kids running around, no teens to guide and no one to visit you when you’re old? If the answer is yes and you’re ok with all of these scenarios, perhaps your mind is already made up. This doesn’t mean you can’t do the whole
diamond ring, wedding and other parts, it just means you are exercising your right to choose your life!

Why do it?
The next thing to consider, if you think you may sway towards having kids, is why you’re having them. If it’s that natural yearning, that motherly instinct and it would be for you – than go for it! If you really don’t want kids, but your partner does, is that really the right reason? Maybe you both need to discuss your reasoning and thoughts more? If it’s to reinvigorate a relationship, or even save one, think again!

What does it mean to your partner?
If your partner is largely indifferent to whether you have kids or not, this basically means the final decision lies with you. You need to decide if it is right for yourself and then let them know which way you’re swaying so they can reconsider their own desires. If you’re partner doesn’t want kids, are they still going to be involved, or are you going to be doing it alone? Your partner is a big consideration, so talk it over a lot!

Career
If you’re a career orientated person, this is going to also weigh heavily on your decision as to whether you have kids or not. Likely at the peak of your career, or still building, this is a crucial time in your working life. In addition to this, think about how you want to raise kids – would you put them in care during all working hours so you could continue to grow your career as soon as you’re able bodied again? If so, is that really how you want your kids to grow up? Think about it!

Future plans
Finally, consider how you view your future and what your future plans are. If you are a traveller at heart, for instance, does a child fit in with your plans?
There’s a lot to consider, so keep your mind open and remember, you can always change it!

8 Things You Should do When Moving House

Moving house can be a stressful time but if you are organised you can help make the process as painless as possible. Choosing the right removalists can also make the task easier. It is important that you continue to have contents insurance while you are moving as it will cover your furniture and possessions while they are in transit.

Hire a Good Removalist

For a successful move it is important to hire a reputable removalist company to transport your furniture and personal belongings. You want a company that you can trust with your personal items and be happy knowing that they will treat your things carefully and get them to their destination in one piece. Ask around any friends or family who have moved for advice.

Change Your Address

You will need to change your address with all the associations and institutions that you are involved with. This will include changing your address on your driver's license, with the bank, with any government organisations (like Centrelink and Medicare) and with any clubs.

Utilities
You will need to cancel the connections of your utilities to your home, such as gas, electricity, water and also your telephone and internet. It is likely you will have to pay a disconnection fee. You will then need to contact the companies that will supply these services to your new home and arrange to have them connected for when you move in.

Pack
Packing can be a difficult and time consuming job but look at it as an opportunity to clean out some of your things. You will find that there are lots of items you don't use any more, clothes you don't wear and if there is anything you haven't seen for years it is likely you don't really need it any more. Give things away to charity or have a garage sale.

Redirect Mail
Until you are able to get your address changed at all the clubs, associations and organisations that you belong to you should have your mail re-directed. Go into your local post office, fill out the necessary form and you will pay a fee to re-direct your mail for a certain amount of time. Gradually you will be able to change your address with everybody after you move.

Know Where Everything Is

Make sure that you know where everything is around your new home. You should have already gone to investigate your children's new school, but also find out where the closest shops are, the newsagent, chemist, doctors and dentist, sporting clubs and public transport. If you have changed jobs find out the best way to get there or what the best way to get to your old job is.

Double Check Before Leaving
On the day you move make sure you check all the rooms to ensure everything has been packed into the removalists truck. Check the built in wardrobes and also check around the back garden, under the house, in the attic and in any sheds.

Don’t Forget Your Friends!
Make sure you don't forget to let your friends know your new address and when you are moving. Also let them know when your house warming party is.
