Blending Correctly for Essential Oil Soaps

>> Feb 21, 2013

Like many things in life, sometimes things get better when they are blended perfectly with carefully selected ingredients. Whiskey, tea and essential oils being a few such things! When it comes to essential oils, they are used in a variety of industries and probably one of the best-known industries is the perfume industry.

There is also the fact that essential oil soaps are becoming increasingly popular today because people want to try out something that is closer to nature rather than something that is full of chemicals. Most soaps can be made by using a single essential oil. But for a soap that delivers a wider array of benefits, one must choose multiple essential oils and blend them perfectly.

Let the fragrance be a guide

When it comes to making essential oil soaps, one must have a finely developed sense of smell in order to be able to choose the right kind of essential oils to be mixed together. However, you could perhaps follow a simple rule of not choosing oils that will clash together as far as their fragrances are concerned. What you can do therefore is to pick up small amounts of the various essential oils that appeal to you. Choose an ink dropper and select just one drop each of these oils, blend them together and see if the fragrance appeals to you.

Let the properties be a guide

You can also choose essential oils based on the properties. For instance,
·         Lavender is said to be a good disinfectant.
·         Eucalyptus is said to be antiseptic.
·         Silver sage soap is said to be calming.
So if you want to create a soap that delivers these kinds of benefits, then you could see if blending these three essential oils works to create a wonderful soap or not.

The nuances of notes

Every essential oil can be classified into three notes in terms of its fragrance – top, middle and base. The heaviest or the longest lasting scent is the base note. Oils such as sandalwood, patchouli and frankincense are classified into this category. Top notes lie on the other side of the spectrum and are said to be the lightest and last for an extremely short duration. Lemon, lavender and sweet orange can be examples of such notes. In the middle are oils such as nutmeg, geranium and neroli.

At the end of the day, there probably is no better guide than your sense of smell and your appreciation of the fragrance that is created when you blend essential oils to make soaps.

Helping Your Family Have a Healthy Diet

>> Feb 20, 2013

As a parent it is your duty to your children to ensure they have all of the essentials they need to function properly in their everyday lives. This includes drinks, food, clothes and shelter. One of the hardest factors to control for your children is the food they eat as they can easily refuse to eat certain foods, or they can attempt to charm their way past having to eat food they do not want or like when you tell them to. Knowing what is healthy and what will help your children grow into strong young adults can give you good insight and ideas into what will make them want to eat more healthily.

There are four steps that you can take as a parent towards ensuring your child eats more of the correct food, allowing them to be healthy and support their developing bodies and immune systems as much as possible. These four steps include; eating more fruit and vegetables, consuming less fat and sugar, watching portion sizes and eating healthier daily snacks.

Eating More Fruits and Vegetables
It must be something about the way fruits and vegetables look that make children not want to eat them as so many children attempt to avoid these items like the plague. Convincing your children to eat these foods can be tough, but there are some good tips and tricks here to help your child reach their five daily fruit and vegetables goal. Firstly, try serving pure juice that is not from concentrate to your children; a glass of this counts as one of the daily five and is something that most children enjoy and do not consider as fruit or vegetables – this can also be a good opportunity to include any dietary supplements that can be mixed with water or juice into the diet. Next it is important to remember that all variations of fruit and vegetables count, this includes frozen, canned and fresh items, so experiment serving frozen fruit with yogurt as dessert and see how your children enjoy this.

Lowering Daily Intake of Fat and Sugar
Consuming foods that are high in fat and sugar is an easy mistake to make for people of any age and children are no exception to this rule, especially as these kinds of food are usually very tasty and therefore requested by children. To attempt to lower these fatty and sugary foods, try buying low-fat and sugar-free alternatives wherever possible. Choose cuts of meat that are leaner, such as skinless chicken or extra lean ground beef to lower fat consumption. Another excellent rule to remember here is to bake or grill food rather than frying as this is a much healthier, less fat-filled option.

Be Aware of Portion Sizes

Overloading plates with food is never the right choice. Although your child is growing and needs energy to be able to grow to their full potential, over-feeding them is not going to help this process. Children need children-sized portions, so give them smaller plates with less food than an adult would consume. Using the smaller plates gives the illusion of the same amount of food when in fact they have less; however it should quell any complaints they may have about portion size. Another rule here is to give small portions with the option of seconds. This ensures your child only eats the amount they want to eat, rather than eating everything on the plate simply because it is there.

Try Introducing Healthier Snacks
Many children get hungry during the day and will request a snack for a little energy boost at some stage between meals. Snacking can become a terrible habit, so offer them something healthy like fresh or dried fruit, or vegetable sticks such as carrot, celery or cucumber. These types of snack allow your child to gain some energy without ruining the healthy balance of their diet. It also allows you to worry less about their snacking habits as you can relax knowing you have given them healthy choices. Of course, cookies and similar snacks can be offered as occasional treats, but they should not be everyday snacking foods.

Helping your family to be healthy ensures they grow strong and have good immune systems for when they are older. It also sets a good example as they progress into young adults and allows them to make healthier choices later in life. Doing everything in your power to let them be healthy when they are younger is one of the best ways to avoid any possible health issues, and allows them to enjoy life to the fullest.

The Vital Equipment for Your School Skiing Trip

>> Feb 19, 2013

For anyone embarking on a skiing trip with their school, it can be an exciting time and for many, it will be their first time experiencing Winter Sports. But what essential equipment should you take with you?
Clothing
Naturally, choosing the right skis, ski poles and boots is fundamental if you are going to enjoy a happy and safe trip but it's important not to forget other essentials at the same time.

Taking right clothing is also vital on any school ski trip but this is an area that is frequently overlooked and it can leave the child hopelessly under-prepared.

Ski Socks
You will need at least two pairs of specific Winter Sports socks for your school ski trip as you'll find them to be extremely damp at the end of the day! Therefore, you will be wearing one pair while the other will be washed and drying, ready for action.

Better still, take three to four pairs if you are skiing for a week or more and while standard tubular socks are a popular buy, it's a wiser choice to pack specially designed ski socks.

Thermals
Thermals are a pre-requisite for any ski trip as they provide an overall layer of warmth that protects you against the elements. As a general rule, several thin layers of clothing are perfect in order to keep you dry and warm and your thermals should always be at the base.

This is one instance where supermarkets and other retail clothing outlets really can compete against the specialist stores. Many of these shops are selling perfectly good thermal ski wear at a huge saving on the price you might pay at a bespoke Winter Sports retailer.

Ski Jacket
It's hard to say which item of clothing is the most important as they all have a vital role to play. However, you simply can't go on a slope without an outer ski jacket or snowsuit and it pays to buy the best quality here.

This is your first line of defence against the cold and any heavy snow conditions that you might encounter.

Goggles
Remember that the glare of the sun from the snow can be extremely powerful so invest in some good quality goggles. They will protect your eyes and it will be safer as you ski.

Gloves
We started with socks and now we end with another vital item that is going to protect your extremities. Fingers and toes are the first to suffer from icy temperatures but there's no need to worry about health issues if you have adequate protection.

Quality here is essential so make sure that the ski gloves you purchase are warm, padded and waterproof. They should cover the wrists and naturally, you need good grip in order to manage the poles as you go down the slopes.

Skis, poles and boots are vital but don't forget that the correct clothing is equally important for any school winter sports trips so remember to pack the right gear for your journey.
