Couple’s Corner: Our Talents

>> Jul 29, 2010

We’re talking about our talents this time! Speaking on talents, I prefer to write my hubby more here. There’s no doubt; he’s a good cook. Every time he tastes any food; he likes to analyze it and he can also mention accurately whatever the spices are. For your information, one Indonesian traditional food can have more than ten spices!

If the problem isn’t a hard one, I can count on him to repair anything at home. As long as he can repair it, we won’t ask for a professional help (it means saving money, hehehe). My hubby can be a good carpenter. Though he can’t work with wood often, he can create his own design and then build it. We install some of his wood works at our porch. You can see it at this photo below.
What about my talent? I just have a little this and a little that. During my school days, I joined the school choir and a vocal group. But, that’s all. I’m too shy to sing alone in front of people! Now I’m just singing to cheer up myself, hehehe. I’ve ever created crafty things. I made hundreds of our wedding souvenirs by myself. And that is my very last project, as I haven’t yet done anything new.

What about your talent? Have anything special to share with us?

Marriage Advice: What Not to Say to Your Partner (2)

>> Jul 26, 2010

Husbands and wives, DON'T SAY these in your marriage:
-I told you so
-You're lazy
-You're fat
-Did you gain weight?
-You ALWAYS (or) You NEVER....
(saying you ALWAYS or you NEVER, is threatening, and not true...it might be this time or sometimes...take the situation on an individual basis)
-You're a failure
-You made a mistake
(that person knows if he or she made a mistake. Pointing it out will only make them resent you)
-You've never listened to me
-You're ridiculous
-That's stupid
-You're such an airhead
-Don't you know how to do anything?
-What's the matter with you?
-Are you crazy?
-You're so dumb
-I hate you
-I don't know why I married you
-You've never helped me
-You don't listen
-All you do is watch tv
-This marriage is a ball and chain
-Do .....(this or that, whatever like ....take out the garbage or why don't you go cut the grass....). ALWAYS ASK. NEVER DEMAND
-You're going to be sorry
-Your paychecks are so small, I can't pay the bills
-You're sloppy
-You've never cleaned the house
-Why don't you fix your hair?
-Is that all you have to wear is that old t-shirt?
-You don't understand anything
-You've never loved me
-You've never showed me love
-You've never done anything for me
-You don't understand anything
-Is that all?
-You're pathetic
-You're not even a man (or woman)
-Don't you know anything?
-You are so....(whatever....thats an automatic insult)

Want to add some other words?

You get the picture, right? Don't poke fun at your marriage when you're with your friends. Don't belittle your spouse or say things that will make them feel insecure or self conscious. Don't degrade your spouse. Don't ever curse at your spouse. Basically, don't insult your spouse. Don't demand anything, ask. Listen. Accept your spouse unconditionally. Be kind and loving, courteous and respectful. Marriage is a beautiful thing and to stay in love, there must be empathy and respect.

Marriage Advice: What Not to Say to Your Partner

>> Jul 25, 2010

Words can make or break us, hurt or heal us. Don’t you agree with this? When I still worked, I’ve ever had bad experience with my boss. He degraded or insulted my work with his harsh words. Have you ever had the similar experience?

Words can hurt. We know deep down that the words can cut like a knife. In a marriage, what we say to our spouse is important. The wrong thing can tear a husband's ego to slices. The wrong words can send a wife's self esteem falling. Words can be the life and death of a marriage.

Often husbands and wives use words out of anger or ignorance, with no conscious awareness of the consequences that their words may have on their spouse. It may be one sentence that could stab like a knife through the heart or it could be small words, relentless torture, that little by little, tear down delicately the love in your marriage.

Here are some suggestions on what to say to make your marriage stronger :

DO SAY:
-I love you
-You look beautiful (or handsome)
-I appreciate you
-I believe in you
-You are a wonderful person
-Thank you
-Would you please help me with this?
-I am thinking of you
-I can't wait to see you
-Please
-Can I help you?
-I love spending time with you
-You mean everything to me
-You are so strong (to the husband)
-You mean the world to me
-I am so lucky to have you in my life
-I am proud of you!
-I respect you
-I am here for you
-I am listening.

You may add other words that you usually use in your own marriage. Things that you should consider are: Always ask, don't demand. Give compliments. Share your feelings. You may think she knows that you love her. You make think he knows that you appreciate him, but often they don't. They need to hear it. Use "I" instead of "You" to start your sentences, so not to put your spouse on the defensive.

Next post is the turn of DON’T SAY part. See you…

Couple’s Corner: Our Hobbies

>> Jul 22, 2010

This week’s topic is talking about hobbies. Well, we need doing our hobbies to relieve stress and spend our spare times with positive things. Since we’re talking about inexpensive hobbies, I won’t mention shopping at malls here. Moreover, when I’m visiting malls, I seldom buy fashion stuffs; window shopping is more fun for me!

I have two new hobbies: blogging and photography. I’m not a web master or a professional photographer; I just like doing it. Fortunately, blogging is still inexpensive. I pay around $11 per month for internet connection and there’s no increase in the electricity bill. Of course, I don’t get a good internet connection; my connection would be very slow in the last week, every month.

To capture moments, I still use my pocket camera. A dslr camera is too expensive for me. I really want to be able to draw things, but I don’t have the talent. My three brothers are good at drawing; it’s only me that can’t draw. Photography is a good alternate; taking reality and beautiful objects is like drawing pictures…

Reading is still fun; but I don’t do it often anymore. There’s a small library near our house. It’s very cheap to borrow a book for a week. Cinta Baca is my favorite place to read and borrow books. I can read various topics of books and novels, according to my mood and need, hehehe.

Let’s talk about my hubby’s hobbies. There’s no doubt, he love cooking. Since we don’t have lots of money, he’s never cooked expensive food. It becomes a challenge to him, how to make delicious food from ordinary matter. My task is cleaning the mess in the kitchen! He also loves his vespa. He renovated it from an old junk vespa. When the weather is fine, we prefer riding the vespa to go anywhere, as long as it’s still inside the city.

I and my hubby love to watch movies, going out for food and listening music. It still can be inexpensive; since we’re fans of yummy but cheap food. There are our favorite places that offer delicious food in best prices. If we watch movies at cinemas; we prefer weekdays; it’s cheaper than weekend. My hubby usually downloads our favorite songs from internet.

It’s my story. What about your hobbies? Is it inexpensive, too?

The Ten Phrases Not to Say to Your Kids (3)

>> Jul 20, 2010

Here are the last three phrases:

8. “Don’t say that.”
Notice this situation: a mother was embarrassed when her daughter once pointed at a frizzy-haired woman at the grocery store and shouted with wide-eyed wonder, “Look at the witch!”

You shouldn’t think that the girl was being rude; she was simply being a kid. Whether the difference is race, ethnicity, orientation, physical abilities, or appearance, these experiences are perfect opportunities to look into kids’ thoughts about diversity, at which point you should share your own.

Don’t shut down the conversation, but rather welcome the open dialogue. As for the inappropriate comments, that is something that you need to discuss with your child, however, do not silence them, as silence taught to a child can breed into an emotional and mental issue later in life.

9. “Let me help you.”
It can be heartbreaking to watch a frustrated child. But sometimes it doesn’t pay to do the superhero rescue. The more challenges children overcome, the prouder they’ll feel, says Dr. Stanley I. Greenspan, author of Great Kids. You are setting your child up for failure when you indulge them and make problems go away instantly. The only way to overcome challenge is to face it head on.

10. “Don’t make me turn this car around!”
There’s not much worse than a car ride with a badly behaved child (or two or three). When you’ve gotten to this point, you’ve already lost control, even from the driver’s seat. If you want to head home, just do it, but don’t give your children the authority to make that decision for you.

The Ten Phrases Not to Say to Your Kids (2)

>> Jul 19, 2010

Dear parents, it’s the second post. If you forget the first three; you can see here.

4. “We’ll see.”

“We’ll see” is a pause button for those times when you just can’t handle another decision. But this age-old trick may very well say to your child that you’re too busy or distracted for her. This in turn provokes your child to continue to ask the same question until you are so annoyed with the constant nagging that you make a rash decision. Instead, ask her to check in with you later. Or, if you’re just delaying the inevitable no, bite the bullet and give it to her straight.

5. “Give Aunt Millie a kiss!”
Forcing your child to hug, kiss, or show affection to someone sends the message that he doesn’t have control. Kids need to be certain that they can say no to unwanted physical attention, starting at a young age, so that as they develop and grow they will know how to handle situations that they may be placed in.

6. “Calm down.”
If your child is hyperventilating or won’t sit still for emergency medical treatment, this phrase may not be so bad. But for ordinary emotions—even those expressed in ways that would rival a soap star’s performance—“calm down” may translate to: “Your feelings don’t matter.”

Swallow your frustration with your child’s theatrics and simply say, “Wow, you’re mad/sad/frustrated, let’s work through this.” You never want to let your child feel as though the expression of emotion is a bad thing, because the alternative – a child that shows little to no emotion – is not easy to handle, either.

7. “When I’m right, I’m right, and when I’m wrong, I’m still right.”
It is all right for your kids to know that you’re not perfect. Actually, they already know it. Experts agree that it’s better for parents to fess up to mistakes than to claim superiority. When you say, ‘I shouldn't have done that,’ your child will have a rock-solid sense that her feelings matter to the people who are most important in her life. Additionally, you don’t want to encourage your children to always be on a quest to be right, because as the phrase goes, no one is perfect.

Couple’s Corner: When We Were Sick

>> Jul 15, 2010

We’re only ordinary human; sometimes we can get sick, right? When I get sick that made me hard to get up from the bed, I always ask my husband’s help to replace my duties. He’s a caring husband, he always takes care of me well; and let me rest all day. I’m a kind of a good ‘patient’, I always take my medicine frequently, so, he doesn’t need to remind me all the time.

When I feel pain in my body, he would massage me to make me more comfortable. When I’m in high fever, he would put a wet towel handkerchief on my forehead to decrease the fever. Big thanks to you...

But when he gets sick; I would be very busy. He becomes a very spoiled man. Sometimes he doesn’t want me to leave him at all, hehehe. In spite of his childish act, I always try doing my best to take care of him.

I guess, one of the important things of a couple life is, we should take care each other…

The Ten Phrases Not to Say to Your Kids

>> Jul 13, 2010

I’ve just read this article (written by Laura Laing); I want to share here for you, parents. Perhaps you’ve noticed that there are many theories on parenting guidance. It’s a wise thing if you have enough knowledge about this; but it’s only you that really know how your child’s personality is. Remember that every child is a unique person, don’t generalize them.

In recent years, some of the most common parental statements have come under study from experts. Here’s a sample of things that you should consider banning from your language.

1.“No.”What is wrong with the word no? There’s nothing’s wrong completely—unless it’s used for everything. Save the big guns for difficult situations, like when your todler is in mortal danger.

It’s far more effective to be specific and positive. Instead of barking, “No!” when your four year old stands up in his chair at the dinner
table, try saying, “Please sit on your bottom.”

2. “Wait until your father (or mother) gets home.”This is one of those things you may think, but is rather best left unsaid. It’s best to make the big parenting decisions together. Additionally, you don’t want to feel responsible for introducing a sense of fear in your child for one parent or the other. This could be a mistake that has the potential to create an awkward relationship as your child grows older.

3. “You’re the greatest!”Of course your child is the best thing, but too much unspecific praise can go to our kids’ heads. Worse, these comments can create pressure for perfection. Experts advise us to be specific and child-centered. Try the following, “You must be very proud of that drawing. I like how you drew a big smile on the sun.” Statements like these allow for greater self-esteem.

I’ll divide this into three posts. See you…

Couple’s Corner: I was Out, He’s in Charge

Again, I don’t share an interesting story here. My hubby was very seldom left alone in the house; and we still don’t have children. I and my father have ever left him alone for a few days; but there’s no problem at all. He can do all household chores; except ironing clothes. So, the only home work for me was finishing the piles of untidy but clean clothes.

I think, as long as the wife and the husband are willing to share of their household chores, we can handle any problem that would happen. Married couples should think as a solid team. Good cooperation is the key! If the situation is enabling; we can ask for an added help from other family member or a professional helper.

Well, I have no story left to tell. If you want to read more interesting story on this topic, visit CC by clicking the badge below.

We Don’t Marry Perfect Persons!

>> Jul 7, 2010

I think you, married couples have realized that your partner isn’t a perfect one; as there’s no perfect person. NOBODY’S PERFECT, right? Accept your partner’s imperfection will make your marriage happier. Why?

Remember this: too much expectation can annoy your relationship. If your mind is full of thinking on your expectations about how is your partner should be; you’ll often feel disappointed.

If you have expectations, don’t hide it in your mind; say it to your partner. But don’t force him to change immediately. It needs process and many times to change one’s habits and personalities. Moreover, you should be ready if in fact, your partner is hard to change or can’t change at all!

You won’t sweat small stuff again. Don’t think small problem as a bigger problem. In our beginning of marriage, I still often sweat small stuffs. I almost grumble and complain every day. For example, my husband has a bad habit: after having a bath, he always put wet towel on the bed. At that time, this bad habit made me angry; but it doesn’t make me angry anymore. Why should I be angry? Just take the wet towel from the bed and hang it outside. You don’t need to be angry, right?

Since it’s hard to change your partner, it’s important for every single person to choose a future husband/wife carefully. Choose someone that love you, respect you, and can accept you completely.

Today is My Husband’s Birthday!

>> Jul 2, 2010

How do I begin to tell you how honoured I am
To have you in my life?
I'll start by saying it was a dream come true
The day I became your wife.
You're my best friend in the good times
And my rock in times of sorrow.
You're the reason for sweet yesterdays
And my promise for tomorrow.
I never thought I could feel this loved
Until I became your wife.
You made this year and each other year
The best of my life.
Love always,
Your Wife

Well, my marriage is almost eight years now; and I’m still convinced that he is the right man for me. What about you? Have you met your dream man/woman?
