Alcohol Addiction: Is a Rehabilitation Center the Answer?

>> Jul 11, 2016

Alcohol use can quickly turn into something serious. Often people start out drinking socially, and then when they realize they like the way it feels, they begin using more and more. Eventually they consume alcohol on a daily basis and soon become addicted. This is not to say that it will happen to everyone that drinks alcohol; however this addiction is one of the most serious health concerns. Addiction to alcohol can have a strong hold over the way you live day to day. Once addicted, you will have physical changes as well as psychological changes to the body that will require the use of alcohol. If you feel like you or someone you know may have an addiction to alcohol, you may turn to the services of a place like Canadian Addiction Rehabilitation Center. Places like this will help determine the best course of action to return you to a healthy more functional person.

Signs of Addiction

If you are concerned that you or someone you care about may have an addiction to alcohol, there are some signs that you can look out for to make the distinction. People with addiction will tend to get anxious for a drink, or build a tolerance to alcohol meaning they will need more and more to reach their desired feelings from the product. If a person wakes up in the morning and wants a drink or if they experience things like, insomnia, sweating or even nausea; they may have an addiction to alcohol.

Consequences of Dependence on Alcohol

Prolonged over use of alcohol can have a variety of negative effects on the body. You can experience seizures, blackouts, depression, poor vision, and anxiety to name a few. After long term use your body can develop cirrhosis of the liver, which is cancer, brain damage, and a high risk of heart failure and stroke. These consequences of using alcohol can be very deadly and are an excellent reason to seek help from a rehabilitation center if addiction is suspected.

Rehabilitation Process

The first step of the rehab process is to detoxify the body of all alcohol. It is never recommended to try to do this on your own as you could have some very serious side effects during this process. Assistance from medical professionals can ensure that you have a better chance of succeeding and also that nothing serious happens to you during the process. After you have completed detoxification, a series of one-on-one and group session will be performed. These sessions are designed to help you open up and possibly figure out the reason you feel the need to use alcohol so vigorously. Often it is an underlying circumstance that a person is dealing with that will cause them to feel despair and turn to alcohol. After you have finished the rehab process, you are generally not finished. It is better if you continue to attend group meetings and one-on-one sessions to ensure that you don’t fall back into the habit of using alcohol.

Alcohol addiction can affect you and those around you in so many negative ways. It is too hard to get away from it on your own and if you think you are addicted, you should consult a rehabilitation center so that you may gain your life back.

Rehab is a great alternative to jail or death. Detox, and treatment is just the start, but one of the best starts a person can make for their self.
