How To Increase Spiritual Awareness And Wellness
>> Apr 3, 2017
Spiritual
awareness is about recognizing your spiritual nature as an essential part of
your real identity. As Teilhard de Chardin put it, “We are not human beings
having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human
experience.”
Since the mind affects the body, peaceful,
spiritual thoughts will stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system, which
relaxes your body, while restless, egoic thoughts will stimulate the
sympathetic nervous system, which will create the fight or flight response.
However, experiencing spiritual wellness is not something that happens by simply focusing on interpreting
life's events in a positive way most of the time; it’s more of a discipline
than merely adopting the right attitude.
Here, then, are some ways to cultivate the
discipline of spiritual wellness:
1. Make a decision.
Everything starts with a decision. Don’t
just hope for spiritual growth, actively pursue it.
2. Define spiritual awareness.
There is no single definition of spiritual
awareness. It all depends on your faith, religious affiliations, or
philosophical point-of-view. However, once you can define it more clearly to
yourself, you will be able to sustain your spiritual growth and experience a
sense of well-being.
3. Don’t confuse detachment with
non-attachment.
If you don’t recognize the distinction
between detachment and non-attachment, it’s only too easy to mistake one for
the other. In Get Healthy with a Spiritual View, a quote by Dr. David Hawkins perfectly
explains the difference: "`Detachment’ is an ongoing process that, unfortunately, can lead to
apathy and emotional flatness, noninvolvement, and indifference. It can also
result in passivity and loss of interest in life. There are misunderstandings
of spirituality that teach that even love is an attachment, which is a
misconception, for love is an aspect of God; possessiveness is an aspect of
ego.”
4. Read spiritual blogs.
Spiritual blogs share stories that can help
you with your own spiritual journey. Find those that appeal to your faith or
that align with your belief systems. Unlike books, you get a chance to interact
with the authors through the comments section. In addition, the blog owner may
host webinars with special guests that will give you spiritual insights. In
addition, the blog may have social media channels that will allow you to
participate in the spiritual community.
5. Going to worship place.
Simply being with others who share your
faith can lift up your spirits. A church, mosque or else is a great way to make
new friends and participate in church or mosque activities. Your spirituality
will flourish when you are in the right environment with other like-minded and
like-hearted people.
6. Seek the comfort of daily prayer.
All of us experience challenges that
overwhelm us. It is often at those times that we reach out to God for help. However,
prayer can offer you comfort even when you’re not experiencing a personal
crisis. Daily prayer becomes a conversation with the Divine Power that is eager
to help you in every possible way. Through daily prayer, you will find great
comfort, and your thoughts will become clear and positive.
7. Contemplation.
Contemplation is reading a few passages
from a holy book and then reflecting on it. As you sit in silence, mulling over
what you just read, your mind will discern deeper meanings. Memories will surface
to make the ideas more personal and relevant. Surprising insights will also
occur because you’ve taken the time to drink deeply from the well of divine
wisdom.
8. Meditation.
There are many ways to meditate. Once
you’ve found a way of meditation that appeals to you, then do it on a regular
basis, preferably at the same time each day and for the same length of time.
According to a Huffington
Post article on the benefits of meditation, this practice has been proven
to reduce stress, improve
concentration, encourage a healthy lifestyle, and increase self-awareness,
happiness, and acceptance.
Since none of us are lucky enough to always enjoy a sense of equanimity
because adverse experiences inevitably arise for all of us, experiences that
make us feel lonely, misunderstood, unloved, and frustrated, focusing on
spiritual wellness tips the scale in our favor. On the health and wellness
spectrum, we are more likely to feel good rather than bad, positive rather than
negative, and calm rather than agitated.
