How to Teach Your Kids Kindness and Compassion

>> Feb 13, 2018

Being a parent is hard work. Sure, you could sit your kid in front of the television all day, but that teaches them zilch about things that matter. Not saying television and other technologies can’t be beneficial, but some one-on-one time with your kiddo is the perfect way to ensure they become well-rounded adults. Ones that exude compassion and kindness.

Expect Your Kids to Help Out at Home

If your kiddo can operate their own tablet or television, they can do dishes, wash laundry, vacuum the bedrooms, and help out around the house. This is something you should expect because they live there too. You could begin with a rewards system or an allowance, but eventually, you need to teach your kids that they should help out because it’s simply the right thing to do.

Instill Good Manners from an Early Age

When you hand your toddler a sippy cup, ask them to say, “thank you.” Or, when they point at something that they want to eat, drink, or play with, ask them to say, “please.” These simple phrases go a long way towards instilling good manners in your children from a young age.

Lead with an Example of Compassion, Kindness, and Love

Your youngsters are sure to learn loads about different topics while attending private schools Tampa FL, but compassion, kindness, and love are taught at home. Kids are little sponges that soak up everything their parents do. So, be a good role model. Lead your life, especially in front of your children, with examples of compassion, kindness, and love. Strive to keep your temper under control and don’t be rude to others.

Eliminate Negative Language and Feelings from Your Home Atmosphere

Children are affected by the things you say and do, so try to keep negative language and feelings out of your home. They remember the cuss words, the yelling between parents, and the tense moments—more so than they remember the good things, like the movie nights, family games, and outings to get ice cream. The best thing you can do is surround your home with positive feelings, because children will face enough negativity when they get into the real world.

Another method to teaching compassion and kindness is to discourage bullying and encourage helpfulness, friendship, and acceptance. Help your kids focus on the positives of the world. And encourage them to strive to change, or help, things that make them upset. For example, if your kiddo boasts a strong stance on world hunger, encourage them to help out at a local soup kitchen.
