Learning Math Online
>> Nov 13, 2015
Math
is usually one of the hardest subjects to learn, due to its nature of having
many formulas, axioms, equations, and fractions. However, if children start
learning it through play, math will be integrated in a natural way, and the
child will not even notice that he or she is actually learning. If familiar
items that children are already interested in are used during the learning and
playing process, they will acquire the knowledge much better. During purposeful
play, opportunities for both mathematical thinking and understanding
will emerge naturally.
Online Games That
Make Math Interesting
Parents
should always try to become involved in their children's mathematics education.
The number of resources, which offer parents various math games that engage children in
mathematical thinking and problem solving, is numerous. These activities
illustrate the mathematics that children can experience at home, at the grocery
store, and while traveling.
Considering
that children are spending more and more time next to the computer, online
games are the best way to keep them interested and entertained. This website
offers various free interactive and educational games, which help children
develop skills in mathematics. These games are suited for children
ages preschool through 8th grade.
1. Math basketball is
a game in which the player must put the ball in the hoop. The ball is passed
from player to player and then the shot will be made to win the game. In order
to do that, the child will need to correctly answer a few math questions.
2. In Night Swimmers,
the player needs to avoid getting electrified by jellyfish
while navigating a school of fish to the right answer. Fish are maneuvered with
the use of a mouse. Finally, the turtle will swim by, carrying a math problem
to be answered.
3. In Math Baseball,
the website will automatically give a player a math problem. Then the child
needs to enter the answer to the problem and hit the "Swing" button.
If he or she answers correctly, they will make a hit. Fun brain will decide if
the hit is a single, double, triple, or home run based on the difficulty of the
problem. If the answer is wrong, the child will get an out. The game is over
after three outs.
4. Shape Surveyor is
an excellent geometry game. After a child has selected the difficulty level –
easy, medium, hard, or super brain – the game can start. A rectangle with the
dimensions labeled will appear on the screen. The child must calculate the area
or perimeter of the rectangle, depending on what he or she has previously
chosen to calculate. For each problem that gets a correct solution, a player
will receive a piece of an archeological puzzle. The game is over when all the
puzzle pieces are shown.
5. For algebra lovers,
there is also a fun game called Operation Order Algebra. The player needs to
help Tortisaurus finish building his stone pyramid. To do so, a player will be
shown three numbers and an equation. He or she has to type in the correct
number in the correct place to complete the equation. A child can also choose
between three levels: easy (where only addition and subtraction are offered),
medium (in which multiplication is added to the other two operations), and hard
(which includes all mathematical operations).
Teachers
and parents can confidently encourage students to use online educational games
during their free time in class, or at home. Online games will help students
revise what they have learned in class and acquire new skills they need to
further their education. The best part is that they don’t even notice that they
are learning, because they think it’s just a game they enjoy playing.
