How to Cultivate a Love of Music in Your Children

>> Mar 10, 2017

Modern parents know how crucial it is to give your children the gift of a musical education. Not only does a love and understanding of music help your child emotionally, it also helps them intellectually. Studies show that children who study music are more advanced readers and have larger vocabularies. That said, it can be difficult to get your kids to tackle an instrument or other music lessons. You don't want to simply add another obligation on them. Instead, make learning about music fun by instilling in your children a love of the subject. Here are five easy ways to get started today.

Listen to Music Together

This is obvious, but parents often underestimate the importance of their music choices on their children. Don't just turn on any old radio station for background noise. And don't expect your kids to listen to music if you don't listen with them. For example, start learning about classical music yourself before you introduce it to your children.

Expand Your Horizons

Don't settle for simply introducing your kids to classical music or jazz, the two most obviously sophisticated music for kids. Try to expand your horizons to other styles of music. One way to do this is to listen to world music, which is simply a collection of international varieties presented together. Talk to your kids about what sounds good and explore that genre together.

Go to Concerts Together

Nothing inspires a child to want to be a musician like seeing one perform in person. You don't need to spend a fortune on concert or orchestra tickets, though. Visit your community groups and bands, all-ages clubs, and coffee shops that have musicians. Check your local newspaper's local events page for more ideas.

Study at Home

Once your kids have expressed an interest in learning music, you can sign up for lessons and start them learning. To succeed, your child will also need to study at home regularly. To make this easier, purchase some music workbooks from a professional instructor like C.R. Carole Music. Your children will need to practice to get good at playing any instrument.

Encourage Their Success

When your child sings or plays, applaud them. Children thrive on this positive attention, and it reinforces their love of music. Don't be hard on them when they make mistakes, just encourage them even more.
