Office Chairs that Deserve a Second Look

Office chairs are among the most underrated and ignored furniture in the office. They’re just there, people use them, but virtually no one gives so much attention to their design and make. For people who are not chair connoisseurs, these chairs are just wallflowers. However, for people who have good grasp of design, furniture construction, and the art, they can easily discriminate good chairs from very ordinary ones.

In the ancient times, chairs were revered and regarded by royalties from different civilizations. Today, however, since they are very common, almost nobody bothers to care about them as long as they are not broken. However, some people still recognize the art and logic behind every chair. Today, some of the rich and famous people are chair connoisseurs; and they treat certain chairs as a luxury – a status symbol.

Some chairs have been considered as icons because of their popularity due to magnificent design and ergonomics. Below are some of the more iconic and popular chairs in recent years.

Model 31307 – Invented by the legendary Arne Jacobsen in 1955, this chair is definitely one of the most popular chairs of all time. More than five million units of this chair model have been sold since its invention. Because of its huge popularity, it has become of one of the most copied chairs. The chair’s curvy and minimalist design is pointed as the main factor for its popularity.

Bucket chair – Cute, stylish, and colorful – these are the common traits of a bucket chair. Designed for children, the bucket chair has become iconic furniture because of its fun style. A typical bucket chair looks like a furniture piece straight from the retro years.

Tulip chair – This chair was designed by no less than Eero Saarinen for the Knoll company of New York in 1955 and 1956. When the first batch of tulip chairs were released on the market, the first impression of the consumers was it was futuristic take on chairs. Since then, the chair has become an icon for modern and futuristic style that does not lack in comfort. Today, consumers are jazzing up these chairs by separately buying chair pads to come up with more interesting color pattern and scheme.

Eames lounge chair – Sold at around AUD 8,400, this lounge chair is not for everybody. The Eames lounge chair is known as a chair for the wealthy few who are willing to spend extra money for a retro-inspired chair that was invented in the 1950s. Usually paired with ottoman, the Eames lounge chair is one of the most comfortable chairs you could use. Some companies are fortunate enough to have these chairs as office chairs.

Barcelona chair – Designed in 1929 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, this masterpiece chair is considered ageless as it is still sold today. The apparent features of the chair include chrome finishing, steel configuration, and comfortable leather pads.

Buying an iconic chair can be very pricey. These chairs are crafted by artists who dedicated their life in creating new creations that are designed to provide comfort to people. Hence, you should not be surprised to see their price tags ranging from few hundreds of dollars to thousands. However, if you don’t have ridiculous amount of money, you can opt to buy inexpensive but comfortable office chairs. You can always visit a retail shop or an online store to find the best chair for your need and budget. At the end of the day, what you need from a chair is comfort and reliability, which is why design and construction are components to look for in a chair.
