How to Keep Your Family in Good Health
>> Jan 17, 2013
Staying fit can be hard when you have a busy work and social life but it
is important to exercise on a regular basis if you want to remain healthy and
live to a ripe old age. Increasing problems with childhood obesity mean that it
is a good idea to encourage your children to exercise too. Many people find
that they do not have the time to visit a local fitness centre as a family so
one of the best ways to ensure that you and your kids stay in great shape is to
invest in some decent exercise
equipment and turn your spare bedroom into a home gym.
Starting out
If you are completely new to exercising or have not exerted yourself
very much in the last few years, it is important to start slowly and build up
to a full workout over time. If you try to complete a comprehensive upper and
lower body workout followed by an aerobic session several times a week after
not having exercised for some considerable time, you will most likely run into
problems. The best case scenario is that you will quickly give up due to
finding it too hard to keep up with your new programme. The worst case scenario
is that you will seriously injure yourself by attempting to do too much too
soon.
Professional advice
Whether you hire a personal trainer, visit your local gym to try out
some of their exercise equipment and discuss your needs with a knowledgeable employee or search the web
for informative articles written by experienced fitness coaches, it is
advisable to heed the advice of professionals when embarking on a new exercise
regime. Once you have been in training for several weeks, you will begin to be
able to judge how far you can push yourself more accurately during each workout
but until that time, always stay within safe limits.
Your home fitness centre
If you do not have a bedroom that is large enough in which to work out,
you could turn your garage into a gym or perhaps build a shed in your garden.
For people that live in apartments, it may be more difficult to finds enough
space but if you invest in a set of dumbbells, a small bench and a stationary
cycle, you should still be able to keep fit without having to leave your home.
Whilst you will not be able to utilise as much exercise equipment as a family that can devote a whole room to
their fitness activities, you will still be able to make good progress and
improve your aerobic fitness and muscle tone. Dumbbells with heavy weights will
allow you to build mass too, so it is possible to devise a comprehensive programme
to suit almost any type of property.
For families that have plenty of space, there is a wide selection of
aerobic and resistance training machines that can be bought online and that
will help you to create varied workout routines over time and avoid the problems
of boredom and fitness plateaus that can result from an unvarying exercise
regime.
Setting goals
To help motivate yourself to work out on a regular basis and to give
your children an incentive to do the same, it is a good idea to set realistic
goals and reward yourselves as and when you reach them. For example, if you are
currently overweight, you could aim to lose 10 pounds in the first couple of
months and then set a new target once you have succeeded. The most suitable
goals to choose will depend on individual members of the family and what they
hope to achieve.
