A Long-Nosed Monkey

>> Nov 25, 2012

We call this kind of monkey Bekantan; also known as proboscis monkey. I captured a female bekantan alone in her cage (Ragunan Zoo, Jakarta, Indonesia). I couldn’t make a clear shot as I took a picture through a thick blurry glass.
The male bekantan’s nose can reach 7 inches in length. The female ones also have big noses –compared to other kind of monkey- but not as large as the males. One of the biggest populations can be found in the Danau Sentarum National Park, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Amazing species that should be protected from being extinction!
