How to Take Advantage of Home Decoration Tips

>> May 11, 2013

One of the best tips on how best to decorate a house is learning to be true to your own sense of style and taste. This will make for a more pleasurable decorating experience.

On the surface, decorating a home sounds like an easy project. Surely all you have to do is choose which colours you like, pick your furniture and accessories, then lay it all out in a pleasing manner. So why do people find it so hard to achieve a unified look throughout their home that they're proud of and don't wish to change?

Very often it's because they've allowed their own ideas and tastes to become compromised by the advice of well-meaning interior designers. The key to having a home that's not only well decorated, but that also is uniquely yours, is to take style tips with a pinch of salt and ultimately follow your own instincts. If, for instance, you love pine wardrobes, don't be swayed if you read in a glossy magazine that a different kind of wood is preferable. Remember that this is the opinion of the designer. If you go with their opinion on the choice of wardrobe, then revert to your own choice of accompanying design options, you're more likely to end up with mismatch than if you listen to your heart from the start.

Choosing Colours
Choosing colours is just as much a personal thing as choosing the wood and style of furniture. Modern home decoration tips may suggest colours which are in style at the moment, but slavishly following the current trend can result in a look that's quickly dated. You'll end up wanting to redo the entire house the following year when a different colour is all the rage, costing time and effort as well as more money.

It is much better to choose your colours independently of modern tastes. Not only will you be happier with your choice in the long run, you'll have more confidence when it comes to mixing and matching contrasting or complementary colours for your accessories.

Choosing Styles
When choosing styles of furniture or accessories, following your own taste is also vital, but it's also helpful if you can follow the style of your home. If you have a modern, new-build house, filling it full of country style, large furniture will make it seem small and overcrowded. The clean modern and minimalist lines of many new properties are best suited to a modern style in furniture with an emphasis on clear surfaces and open spaces. Allow the house to have a certain say in the furnishings you choose and you'll create an area filled with harmony.

Staying True to Yourself
Have the courage of your convictions when it comes to decorating your home. Choose colours you like, go for furniture that you'll love to use and look at and choose accessories that give pleasure either because they're beautiful or useful.

Trying to follow the advice of others, especially if that advice conflicts with your taste, will only make you unhappy.
