Simple and practical ways on how you can extend the lifespan of your carpets

There is nothing quite like the look and feel of a fresh carpet, not to mention the aesthetic pleasures that selecting the perfect carpet for your interior can have for your home’s overall look. Maintaining the carpet’s health for a long period of time, however, can be quite a daunting task, especially when you factor in years of general wear and tear that will eventually occur. There are, however, a few things that you can do over the course of your daily routine that will prolong the life of your carpet. These handy little tips require no major effort or expenditure on your part, and will allow for you to either live with that fresh feel for a lot longer, or get the most out of your current carpet surface and extend its life for a long time to come yet. Remember, these tips are not a substitute for a professional carpet cleaning service. The equipment used as well as the cleaning materials they have at their disposal can not only extend a carpet’s lifespan, but also reinvigorate even the most worn and tired looking of carpet surfaces.

Vacuum regularly

We’ll concede that this is fairly obvious, but given the term regularly can be open to interpretation, chances are that many people don’t vacuum their carpets enough as they should. The general rule of thumb is at least once a week for a typical family household, which is sufficient enough to not only remove any dust and generally make your home a healthier place to live in, but also to just freshen up your carpets’ underlay and fibres. However, if you have a larger-than-normal family, or you live in a sharehouse where foot traffic is at a maximum, you may need two goes at the vacuum cleaner. Foot traffic is often overlooked as one of the issues that can compromise your carpet floorings, as the fibres can be pressed down and give the carpet a very flat and dull look. Frequent vacuuming can restore the upright nature of the fibres, giving them life and depth once more.

Remove stains immediately

Spilled liquid, even clear and seemingly innocuous substances such as water, can severely hurt carpets if left untreated for a considerable amount of time. Forgetting the colour stain that coffee, wine, and other common carpet disasters leave behind, left alone they can also do damage to both the fibres of the carpet and the underlay. If a spillage occurs, don’t delay and clean it as quickly as possible. In the event that you can’t remove coloured stains quickly enough, don’t fret, as they can be removed completely through professional carpet cleaners in Melbourne. You should focus on at least getting the affected area dry, so as to not again flatten the tiny little carpet fibres that make up the surface.

Move furniture around periodically

Heavy furniture such as a couch, a TV unit, and a coffee table will leave flattened dents in the carpet, of which we have all become accustomed to. What many don’t realise is that even slightly moving the furniture aside from where it’s placed will give the flattened areas time to rejuvenate. This doesn’t mean you have to rotate your entire living room or bedroom, the smallest adjustment can make a world of difference. If you want to quickly restore the flattened area, a quick going over with a vacuum against the grain of the flattened fibres will help tremendously. This is a trick employed by many showroom businesses that need every aspect of the room that they are showcasing to be perfect, and can be done with relative ease at your home. Whilst simple, these things will make a huge difference to the look and feel of your carpets overtime, as well as prolonging its health and overall lifespan. Combine this with a reliable and professional carpet cleaning service that you can rely on throughout the years, and your carpet will look as good as new for a long time to come.
