Keeping Your Home and Family Secure Throughout the Summer

>> Jul 12, 2018

Summertime is in full swing and the kids are likely spending the majority of their time at home. Because you can’t be there 24/7 to watch over your property, it’s important to have the premises secure at all times. Making sure your children and family members are safe from intruders is your number one priority. It doesn’t have to be super complicated to protect your home. Incorporating multiple layers of security is the best way to have peace of mind. Here are just a few examples.

Adding a Quality Security System

It’s pretty well known that a security system can keep most burglars and home invaders at bay and alert the authorities when there’s a security breach. Do you already have a security system? In order for it to work to your benefit, it must be in top-notch condition and be connected directly to a security company. If you already have one, call your security to come out and do a complete safety check. If you don’t have one or your existing system is outdated, call an alarm company to come out and install a system that:

  •  Has closed-circuit live cameras for streaming
  •  Alarm monitoring for fast detection of fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide
  • Notifies you immediately of a door, window, or glass break and entry
  • Allows for remote access to your alarm and cameras via smartphone and email

Make sure you have a security alarm system that is tailored to your needs. You can customize most systems so that you can have minimal features or specialized add-ons that will make you feel safer depending on how much security you want and what your budget will allow.

Keeping Windows and Doors Secure

A secure home means having windows and doors that aren’t easy to break into. Older doors that have a lot of gaps between the jambs can be a welcoming sign to an intruder. Many times the locks don’t close properly or have become weakened over the years due to repeated use. If this is the case, consider purchasing heavy duty steel doors with steel bolt locks. Be sure that the doors are installed properly as well as insulated well too. This will make it harder for someone to gain entry through the door and pry away the door from the frame. Windows also play an important role in the safety of your family. Make sure that your windows are properly fitting and constructed well enough to withstand an attempted entry. Selecting windows that are double paned, insulated and have security locks on the inside are a good choice when it comes to protecting your family.

Invest in Smart Home Technology

Making your home safe means having your security system work in unison with other elements inside and outside of your home. Utilizing smart home technology starts with a smart hub. The hub will control your home’s security system as well as your main appliances, HVAC system and lighting system throughout the home. This will make it convenient for you to remotely turn your heat or air conditioning on or off or switch a lamp off even when your miles away from home. A smart hub will be able to allow you to control multiple electronic devices and systems in your home remotely to help you stay better connected with your family and home while you’re away.

Making Your Property Intruder Proof

While alarms, cameras and gated driveways are good ways to keep burglars at bay, take a good look at the perimeter of your property. Are there locations where an intruder could hide? Such as a strip of overgrown bushes or shrubbery? Maybe an old shed that you never use? These locations may just look unkempt but in reality, they can be the perfect hiding spot for someone looking to sneak into your house. Be sure to keep trees and plants trimmed at all times. Allow your pathways in the front, back and side of your home to be lit up to create a border that you can easily see both day and night. Install your cameras in blind spots and keep track of who is coming in and out of your home, especially when you’re not home.

Keeping your family safe this summer doesn’t have to be a challenge. Enjoy the pool and the backyard, just keep a close watch on things at the same time.
