Similarities Between Caffeine and Kratom

>> Jan 19, 2019

If you’re like the rest of the world, you’ve probably heard a lot about Kratom, especially if you’re looking into natural ways to seek out a bit more energy. You may have learned that Kratom is like caffeine in many ways, so you’re wondering just where the similarities begin and end.

First, let’s take a look at the main definition of each, so that we can better understand their origins and possible uses.

Kratom and Caffeine Defined

Kratom - Kratom is not an herbal supplement, but is actually what is known as a raw botanical coming from the Mitragyna speciosa plant. The plants have large, broad leaves, which is where most of the products are derived. It grows primarily in Southeastern Asia, and it offers various biochemical properties from its multiple variants.

Kratom offers different strains, and each of these strains offers multiple veins. This means that, depending on which type of Kratom you decide to purchase, there are numerous different benefits that Kratom can offer each individual specifically.

Caffeine - Whenever you think of caffeine, you probably think about your favorite brew from Starbucks, or perhaps even your usual choice when it comes to sodas. However, caffeine can originate from over 60 different plants, and it is a stimulant of the central nervous system. This means that there are a plethora of ways to consume caffeine, and it has many uses.

Caffeine is technically a psychoactive drug. However, it is legal, and while it may be somewhat addictive, it is typically not harmful, like other psychoactive drugs may be. It can create a burst of energy, which is why it’s common to hear people say, “Wow, I need some caffeine!”

Similar Origins

As mentioned, Kratom comes from the Mitragyna speciosa plant, which quite ironically, is in the coffee tree family of plants. Additionally, both coffee and Kratom are from the Rubiaceae family, which is the root of so many other similarities, properties and individual uses. In fact, this is where it all starts!

But what are a few other similarities between caffeine and Kratom? Let’s take a look!

Biochemistry Likeness

When it comes to both caffeine and Kratom, the alkaloids are the properties that actually work to create the results that you may be hoping to contain. It’s best to first remember that different alkaloids can produce a variety of results. Some of the 25 different alkaloids found in Kratom include:
     Corynoxine
     Mitragynine
     Mitraphylline
     Speciogynine
     Tetrahydroalstonine
     Speciophylline
     Paynantheine
     7-hydroxymitragynine
     9-Hydroxycorynantheidine
     Ciliaphylline

With Kratom, each strain produces different veins, all with different properties that will offer a long list of potential benefits. Therefore, to purchase Kratom, you’ll want to do so by the individual strain, depending on the preferences of the user.

Things work in a similar way with caffeine as well, which is actually an alkaloid of itself. While it is normally used as a stimulant, it comes from many different plants, all with multiple types of alkaloids. Caffeine is made up of:
     Hydrogen
     Nitrogen
     Carbon
     Oxygen

Same Uses

There are many uses for both Kratom and caffeine, but most users are typically after a boost of energy, or that little extra “something” to help them wake up in the morning or get through to the end of the day at the office. Of course, scientific research does show that Kratom has many other potential benefits. However, when it comes to feeling a bit more energetic, then Kratom and caffeine are very similar.

Ways to Ingest

There are several ways that a person can take Kratom or get some caffeine into their system.

When you’re thinking about caffeine, most people consider grabbing a cup of coffee, brewing a pot of tea or popping open a can of their favorite soda. However, caffeine also comes in multivitamins and is even a standard ingredient in a lot of weight-loss supplements.

Kratom leaves can also be used to make a cup of coffee or a piping hot tea. If you want to use the powder, it can be mixed into a smoothie. But if you’re looking for an on-the-go method, Kratom powder can be made into capsules, which anecdotal reports show can be used to also help maintain a healthy weight.

As you can see, the similarities between caffeine and Kratom are many, offering a number of important benefits for the user. Plus, literature illustrates that Kratom is no more addictive than a simple cup of coffee, so they have that in common as well!

Caffeine and Kratom can both be used as stimulants, but remember that Kratom offers many other potential benefits. Researchers are just now discovering some of them, but you can look to Kratom to help alleviate sleeping problems, control stress and even potentially help to relieve other chemical dependencies. Once you begin to explore how they can work for you and your individual needs, it will be easier than ever to choose between Kratom and caffeine!
