Whether it is
a fundraising event or just a friendly gathering for fun and frolic, organizing
a Cornhole game is the latest craze. The innocuous-looking game that involves
players trying to hurl a few bags, of dry corn into a six-inch hole created on
a wooden board has caught the fancy of the Americans for almost fifty years as
a favorite pastime game. However, the founding of American Cornhole Association
or ACA in 2003 marked the rising popularity of the game that has now become a
craze at bars, church picnics and tailgate parties leaving aside fundraising
events. If you ever hear about games
named Baggo or Bags, then you should know that it is the same Cornhole game.
The origin of the game
The game
originated in Cincinnati around the late fifties of the twentieth century, so
goes the saying, as a backyard activity for fun and pleasure and the place
still basks in its glory. Gradually, the people of Chicago, Milwaukee and
Indianapolis got attracted to it and contributed to making it popular far and
wide.
A simple game
Although there
is no limit to the number of participants in the game, the minimum requirement
is a two-on-two format. Players tossing bags filled with corn kernels into a
hole in a wooden plank placed in a slanting way is what players have to achieve
in the game while earning three points for each successful attempt. Cornhole boards, the name of the
wooden planks, stay at a distance of 30 feet from the players who aim at the
target. If a player misses the hole, but the bag stays on the board, then it
earns one point. The first team that scores 21 points wins the game and players
can even negate a point every time they knock off other's bags from the board.
The simplicity
of the game can be quiteenticing as it allures people who think it to b too
simple and feel confident of doing well but eventually discover that it is
easier said than done. Thus, begins the process of getting addicted to the
game.
Scoring tips
Knowing how to
score in a Cornhole game requires skills that you must acquire by practicing
and playing the game more. Not knowing how to score could cost you the game if
you goof up easy chances of scoring points. The scoring system stipulates that
you earn the highest point (three) for putting the bag into the hole, but even
you get points if you can keep the bag on the board close to the target that
gives you one point. Even if the bag
enters the hole but stops midway and keeps hanging inside without touching the
ground, then you will get one point only. However, if there are bags on the ground under
the hole and your bag hangs in the hole and touches the bag below, then you do
not get any point.
For earning
three full points, the bag must go through the hole.
